How a Muzaffarpur Man Turned a Lost Job Into a Mutton Empire — One Quintal Sold Every Day on a Secret Home Masala

After losing his private-sector job, Muzaffarpur's Kamlesh Srivastava turned his love of cooking into a thriving business; his Champaran Mutton Handi at Lenin Chowk, made with home-ground secret spices, is now famous across the district.

Losing a job leaves most people stuck blaming circumstances. Kamlesh Srivastava of Muzaffarpur turned that same setback into a fresh start. When his private-sector job slipped away, instead of chasing another one, he leaned on his oldest passion — cooking — and made it his livelihood. Today his 'Champaran Mutton Handi' at Lenin Chowk is known well beyond the city, reaching across the whole district.

A Hobby Left Unfulfilled

Kamlesh recalls that two things drew him most as a child — cooking and acting. The pressure of household finances kept him tied to a private job for years, but his heart was never in it. Then one day that job was gone. Worry about the future crept in, yet he refused to give up, deciding instead to build a life around what he truly loved.

The Foundation Laid in 2016

In 2016 he opened his Champaran Mutton Handi shop at Lenin Chowk. The early days were anything but easy — winning over customers took relentless effort. He cooked the mutton himself and worked to make people recognise its taste. Slowly, word of the flavour from his kitchen spread through the city, and his customer base kept growing.

The Secret Lies in Home-Ground Masala

The real strength of his dish is not any spice bought from the market but the masala made at home. Kamlesh uses no outside spices at all — he prepares every blend himself, including a few secret spices that make the mutton taste even richer.

Roughly One Quintal Sold Daily

The scale of his effort shows in the numbers: about one quintal of mutton now sells every single day. The cooking is done between 8 am and 10 am, and preparing it takes around two hours. Kamlesh says he cooks the mutton with full care and in the traditional way, so that customers get a homemade taste. At present, his handi mutton is available at the rate of 1100 rupees per kilogram.

Mutton is not the only option. Chicken is also prepared here, and in winter, fish is made to meet customer demand. For those who can't make it to the shop, home delivery is available too, so the flavour can be enjoyed at home.

His Mantra for Success

Kamlesh believes the biggest formula for building any business rests on three things — taste, quality and the customer's trust. The journey he began with his family's support and his own self-confidence has now grown into a successful enterprise.

People Travel From Far for the Taste

It has reached the point where customers come not just from Muzaffarpur city but from different parts of the district, heading specifically to his shop. The flavour from his hands has become so well known that anyone passing through wants to taste the handi mutton at least once. Next time you're in the area, don't miss a chance to try Kamlesh's special mutton.
