A Brutal Attack on a Defenceless Animal in Meerut
A deeply disturbing case of animal cruelty has come to light from the Sardana police station area of Meerut district in Uttar Pradesh. A street dog was shot at with an illegal firearm by a man named Shami for no reason beyond the fact that it was barking at him. The incident triggered widespread outrage among residents and animal welfare activists. However, swift police action and the intervention of two Delhi-based NGOs have ensured the injured dog received timely medical care and the accused now sits behind bars.
What Happened on the Road
The dog was resting quietly by the roadside when Shami walked past. The animal began barking at him. Instead of walking away, Shami pulled out an illegal country-made pistol and opened fire on the defenceless dog. Pellets tore into the animal's body, leaving it bleeding heavily and writhing in agony on the spot. Shami fled the scene immediately after the attack.
Delhi NGOs Rush to the Rescue
A local dog lover who witnessed the injured animal's condition wasted no time in alerting an active NGO based in Delhi. Two organisations, 'Amanat' and 'Karnpuri Foundation', mobilised without delay. Working together, they coordinated a rescue operation and transported the critically injured dog to a large private hospital in Delhi for emergency treatment.
Surgery Successful, Dog Recovering
At the Delhi hospital, a team of doctors performed surgery on the dog and successfully extracted all the pellets lodged in its body. The animal's condition is currently stable and treatment is ongoing. The rapid response of both the NGOs and the medical team is credited with pulling the dog through what could have been a fatal ordeal.
Case Filed, Shami Sent to Custody
The NGOs submitted a formal written complaint to the Meerut Police detailing the full sequence of events. Taking the matter seriously, police registered a case under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act along with other serious legal provisions. The Sardana police launched raids and arrested Shami, who has since been sent to judicial custody. Police records also reveal that Shami's family carries a prior criminal history.
NGO Head Priya Chopra Praises Police Response
Priya Chopra, who heads the Delhi NGO involved in the rescue, released a video statement following the arrest. Expressing her satisfaction at the speed of the police response, she said, "We sincerely thank the Yogi Police for taking swift action against the cruelty inflicted on a defenceless animal."
