Tucked away in the Rasmandal locality of Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh stands a building whose walls once bore witness to India's struggle for freedom. The residence belonged to the late freedom fighter Rameshwar Prasad Singh, and even today it remains a living testimony to the proud memories of the national independence movement. When the country's tallest leaders travelled to Jaunpur during the fight for freedom, this was often the roof under which they stayed and deliberated on matters of national importance.
A Hub for Planning the Movement
Dr. Vimla Singh, the daughter-in-law of the household, recalls that in those years the house had become a significant centre of the national movement. For prominent leaders, it was the natural place to halt whenever they came to Jaunpur. More than hospitality, the home hosted serious discussions — from the strategy of the freedom struggle to pressing social and political questions of the day.
Figures such as Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Sarojini Naidu, Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya and Jayaprakash Narayan have all walked through its courtyard.
Who Came, and When
According to Dr. Vimla Singh, the stream of leaders visiting the house continued over many years. Sarojini Naidu arrived here in 1927. The very next year, in 1928, Pandit Motilal Nehru accepted the family's hospitality.
The country's first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, came to the house twice — in 1922 and again in 1937. The year 1937 also saw the visit of educationist and freedom fighter Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, while in 1938 the people's leader Jayaprakash Narayan set foot in the building.
That Morning of 2 October 1929
The most cherished moment for the family came when the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, arrived at this historic courtyard at 8 in the morning on 2 October 1929. Dr. Vimla Singh recounts that a large crowd had gathered that day to welcome him. The family still swells with pride at the memory of Bapu's visit.
A Long Roll of Stalwarts
Beyond these prominent names, many other national leaders visited the residence from time to time. Dr. Vimla Singh lists among them Shriprakash, Dr. Sampurnanand, Acharya Narendra Dev, Rajarshi Purushottam Das Tandon, Acharya J.B. Kripalani, Yusuf Meherally, Seth Govind Das, Feroze Gandhi, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Kamlapati Tripathi, Chaudhary Charan Singh, C.B. Gupta, T.N. Singh, Dr. Rammanohar Lohia, Dr. Syed Mahmood, Syed Ali Zaheer, Krishnadutt Paliwal, Keshavdev Malviya, Mohanlal Gautam, Nisar Ahmad Sherwani, Hafiz Muhammad Ibrahim and Chandrabhal.
More Than One Family's Legacy
Dr. Vimla Singh stresses that the building is not merely her family's private inheritance but an inseparable part of Jaunpur's proud history. During the days of the independence movement, the country's leading figures would assemble here, and many crucial issues tied to nation-building were debated under this roof.
A Heritage Awaiting Protection
Even now the house stands, holding on to the memories of that era. Dr. Vimla Singh worries that this heritage deserves proper preservation, so that future generations may understand how large a role the soil of Jaunpur played in the country's freedom struggle. She believes the residence remains, to this day, a symbol of Jaunpur's pride, its history and the priceless legacy of the fight for independence.
