When the heat peaks, an air cooler becomes almost every household's go-to, simply because it delivers relief without burning a hole in the pocket. But in the eyes of Vastu Shastra, it is far more than an ordinary electrical gadget. A cooler holds water and pushes out air, which means both the water and air elements stay active inside it at once. That is precisely why the corner you choose to keep it in is believed to influence the energy and atmosphere of the whole home. Placed in the right direction it can bring favourable results, while the wrong spot is said to stir up a string of problems.
The north-west is rated the best spot
Vastu experts put the north-west, or the Vayavya corner, at the top of the list for a cooler. The reasoning is that this direction is governed by the air element, and since a cooler's whole job is to throw air, the two are seen as a natural match. The belief is that a cooler kept here sustains a flow of positive energy through the house, opens up opportunities for progress for family members, and lets you enjoy its cool air far more effectively.
The north carries a link to wealth
The north is associated with Kubera, the god of wealth, and with the water element. Since a cooler cannot run without water, keeping it in this direction is also considered auspicious. Vastu belief holds that doing so helps maintain financial stability at home and may ease money-related worries to some extent.
The east works as a fallback
Sometimes the layout of a house simply does not allow a cooler in the north or north-west corner. In that case, the east is regarded as a good alternative. It is said that placing a cooler towards this side keeps the health of the household in good shape and encourages positive thinking.
Say no to the south-east corner
The biggest word of caution concerns this very direction. Vastu Shastra treats the south-east, or the Agneya corner, as the zone of the fire element. Keeping a water-filled cooler in this fiery direction is not considered wise, because the clash between fire and water creates an imbalance. According to the belief, it is this imbalance that breeds tension, disputes and financial trouble within the home. For that reason, the advice is to keep the cooler well away from this corner.
Beyond direction, mind these habits too
Choosing the right direction alone is not enough. As per Vastu, leaving a damaged or unused cooler lying dirty for long stretches is regarded as inauspicious. The water in the cooler should also be changed from time to time, since stagnant, dirty water sitting in one place can invite negativity into the home.
