Diplomatic visits are usually remembered for the talks and the deals, but it was a small, warm moment in Slovakia that ended up winning over social media this time. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi met his Slovak counterpart Robert Fico, all eyes turned to one thing the two leaders had in common, their nearly identical jackets.
A Light-Hearted Welcome
The instant PM Modi arrived, Robert Fico stepped forward with his arms wide open. As the two greeted each other warmly, Modi's attention fell on what Fico was wearing. Over a blue shirt and trousers, Fico had on the same traditional sleeveless jacket that has become Modi's signature look, and its colour matched Modi's own almost perfectly.
Unable to hold back his smile, Modi can be heard in the video remarking,
‘क्या संयोग है, कलर कॉम्बिनेशन मैच कर रहा है’
The Story Behind the Gift
Modi later shared the entire moment on Instagram and let the audience in on the backstory. He revealed that the jacket was one he had personally gifted to Robert Fico, and that by sheer coincidence both leaders had ended up with the same dress code on the day of their meeting. The exchange quickly earned the label of 'jacket diplomacy'.
Why the Visit Matters
The trip is significant for far more than this charming moment. Narendra Modi is the first Indian Prime Minister to travel to Slovakia since Czechoslovakia split in 1993, and the welcome he received there set a fresh benchmark for the friendship between the two nations.
Eleven Landmark Agreements
Amid all the warmth, there was solid diplomatic progress too. India and Slovakia elevated their bilateral relationship to the level of a 'comprehensive partnership' and signed a total of 11 landmark agreements. These deals are aimed at deepening cooperation in key areas such as migration, digital technology and defence.
