She Was Quoted $1,000 for Six Tablets in the US — The Same Medicine Reached Her From India for Just $25

American woman Victoria says a drug that would have cost her $1,000 out of pocket in the US arrived from India for only $25 — and she has flatly branded the US healthcare system a 'scam'.

The cost of prescription drugs has once again put America's entire healthcare system under the scanner — this time because of one woman's Instagram video. In it, an American named Victoria laid out, figure by figure, just how vast the price gap is between buying the same medicine in the US versus having it shipped from India. Her clip is spreading fast across social media, with many calling it a brutal snapshot of how the American system really works.

The maths: $1,000 versus $25

According to Victoria, the medicine she needed would have cost her $1,000 (₹95000) out of pocket in the US — and that was for just six small tablets. The reason was simple: her insurance company refused to cover the expense. In the video she says, 'I would have had to pay $1,000 out of pocket for six small tablets of this drug in America, because my insurance company was not covering it.'

Unwilling to hand over that kind of money, she got a different route from her own doctor — send the prescription to a Canadian pharmacy that could order the very same drug directly from its manufacturer in India. 'My doctor told me to send the prescription to a Canadian pharmacy. I sent it. I thought maybe it would cost 100 or 200 dollars, and I was ready for that,' Victoria recalls. But the real price left even her stunned.

'Just $10 for the drug, $15 for shipping'

The figure the pharmacy quoted, Victoria says, was far lower than anything she had imagined. 'They said 25 dollars. Just 10 dollars (₹950) for the medicine and 15 dollars for shipping. It was shipped internationally, straight to me from the drug manufacturer in India,' she explains. In other words, the medicine priced at $1,000 in America landed at her door for a mere $25 once it came directly from India.

She then turned her anger on the US healthcare system. 'Our healthcare system has become a joke. We are being openly scammed. How can the very same medicine cost 1,000 dollars in America and be available for 10 dollars from India?' she asked. She also questioned what, exactly, that enormous sum was even buying. 'What was I going to pay 1,000 dollars for in America? Where was that money even going? It's a rhetorical question, but you get my point,' she says.

How social media reacted

The moment the video went viral, the comments filled up with people piling onto the American system and praising India's cheap medicines. 'I have also ordered medicines directly from India, and that too without a prescription,' one user wrote. Another claimed the same drug is even cheaper on Indian shelves — 'In India this medicine can be had for around 100 rupees, which is roughly 1 dollar.'

One commenter even broke down the entire cost in a joking tone, writing, 'Come visit India, take a week's holiday, buy your medicine and fly back to America. Even then the total bill will stay under 1,000 dollars.' Victoria's clip may have begun as one personal experience, but it has reignited a much bigger debate over sky-high drug prices and the insurance system in the United States.
