Suraiya: The Girl Who Walked In To Watch A Shoot, Walked Out A Star — And Stayed Unmarried For Love All Her Life

Suraiya visited a studio merely to watch a film being shot, and a director handed her a role on the spot — turning her into one of cinema's brightest stars, even as her unfinished romance with Dev Anand left her single for life.

Some figures from the early golden years of Hindi cinema never fade with time, and Suraiya was firmly among them. A rare blend of beauty, gifted acting and a velvety voice carried her to a height that is remembered with respect even decades later. What makes her story striking is that she never set out to be on screen — circumstances pulled her into the film world. And in an even more remarkable twist, she chose to remain unmarried her whole life for the sake of love.

From Lahore To Mumbai

Suraiya was born on 15 June 1929 in Lahore, and her full name was Suraiya Jamal Sheikh. When she was just one year old, her family settled in Mumbai. Her maternal uncle, M. Zahoor, was already part of the film industry, so from childhood she grew up surrounded by cameras, sets and music. Very early on she began singing on children's programmes for All India Radio, and her sweet voice quickly won listeners over.

One Glance That Changed Everything

The real turning point came when Suraiya accompanied her uncle to Mohan Studio to watch the shooting of the film ‘Taj Mahal’. She had gone only to take in the spectacle, but the eye of director Nanubhai Vakil, present on the set, fell on her. Struck by her innocence and simplicity, he handed her the role of Mumtaz Mahal in that very film. That moment laid the foundation of her cinematic journey.

A Voice That Earned Its Own Fame

Acting was not her only talent. As a singer too, Suraiya earned wide acclaim. The renowned composer Naushad was so taken with her voice that he gave her the chance to sing in the film ‘Sharda’. The songs that followed became numbers that music lovers still hum today. Tracks like ‘Dil-e-Nadan Tujhe Hua Kya Hai’, ‘Tu Mera Chand Main Teri Chandni’, ‘Wo Pass Rahe Ya Door’, ‘Chup-Chup Khade Ho Zaroor Koi Baat Hai’ and ‘Dheere-Dheere Aa Re Badal’ carried her name into every household.

Hit Films And The Dev Anand Pairing

Her record on the acting front was just as long. Several successful films stood to her credit, including ‘Anmol Ghadi’, ‘Pyar Ki Jeet’, ‘Vidya’, ‘Dillagi’, ‘Badi Behen’, ‘Shayar’, ‘Dastan’, ‘Afsar’, ‘Sanam’, ‘Deewana’ and ‘Mirza Ghalib’. Audiences loved her pairing most of all with actor Dev Anand. The chemistry visible on screen had, in real life, already blossomed into love.

A Romance Left Unfinished

Yet the love between Suraiya and Dev Anand never reached marriage. Owing to obstacles tied to family and religion, the two could not be united. Their unfinished relationship is still counted among the most talked-about love stories in Hindi cinema.

At The Peak Of Stardom

In those days Suraiya's popularity was no less than that of any major superstar. Crowds of fans gathered outside her home, waiting for hours just to catch a glimpse of her. She was among the highest-paid actresses of her era, and her appeal was not confined to India alone — it stretched to audiences abroad.

A Simple Farewell

After a long stretch of active years in the industry, Suraiya gradually stepped away from films. She never married and lived an extremely simple life. As she grew older her health began to weaken, and finally, on 31 January 2004, she bid the world farewell at the age of 74. But through her songs, her films and her memorable performances, she remains alive in millions of hearts to this day.
