In Bollywood, a handful of films do more than just succeed at the box office — they turn into a feeling. Aamir Khan's ‘Lagaan’ is exactly that kind of film. From the moment it hit screens in 2001, it created a wave that still feels fresh. The story, the songs and the powerhouse performances all found a permanent place in viewers' hearts. And yet the same film featured several faces who earned thunderous applause for their roles, only for audiences to struggle to recognise them today.
Two Patriotic Tales, Released Side by Side
What makes the moment even more interesting is that Ashutosh Gowariker's period sports drama ‘Lagaan’ did not arrive alone. Around the very same time, ‘Gadar Ek Prem Katha’ was also in theatres — a completely different kind of film, but powered by the same spirit. Patriotism was the soul of both, and both managed to touch the heart of every Indian viewer. A simultaneous box-office clash is usually seen as a threat to films, but this particular contest turned into a golden chapter for Bollywood.
Raghubir Yadav: From Bhura to Brij Bhushan Dubey
The first of these forgotten names is Raghubir Yadav. In ‘Lagaan’ he played Bhura, the villager who reared chickens and kept everyone entertained with his witty banter. After the film he appeared in titles like ‘Peepli Live’ and ‘Newton’. His role as Brij Bhushan Dubey in the web series ‘Panchayat’ made him a household name. Even so, he is seen far less often these days, and audiences rarely bring up his name.
Aditya Lakhia: Forever Remembered as ‘Kachra’
Aditya Lakhia played Kachra, still counted among the most memorable characters in ‘Lagaan’. It was his spin bowling that ultimately carried the team to victory. He went on to work in several television shows, yet for viewers he remains, to this day, simply ‘Kachra’.
Yashpal Sharma: A Traitor First, a Hero Later
Yashpal Sharma was seen as Lakha in ‘Lagaan’ — the character who betrays his team at first but later makes up for his mistake. He went on to leave his mark in films such as ‘Gangaajal’, ‘Apaharan’ and ‘Rowdy Rathore’ as well.
Rajesh Vivek: Guran's Prophecies and an Unfinished Goodbye
Rajesh Vivek brought the character of Guran to life in the film. His strange prophecies and quirky style made the role a clear favourite. He was also part of films like ‘Swades’ and ‘Jodhaa Akbar’, but he gradually slipped out of the public eye. He passed away in 2016.
Raj Zutshi: The Potter Who Began Alongside Aamir Khan
Raj Zutshi started his career together with Aamir Khan. In ‘Lagaan’ he played Ismail — the village potter and a member of the cricket team. He was later seen in ‘Kidnap’ and ‘Article 15’, along with several web series.
Paul Blackthorne: The Villain Audiences Completely Forgot
Paul Blackthorne won wide praise for playing Captain Andrew Russell, the main antagonist of the story. After ‘Lagaan’ he went on to work in international television series such as ‘24’, ‘The Dresden Files’ and ‘Arrow’. Despite all that, Indian viewers have all but forgotten him today.
