Beyond the Fruit: How One Banana Plant Can Power a Dozen Businesses and Lakhs in Income

In Madhya Pradesh's Burhanpur district, where bananas are grown across 25000 hectares, farmers are turning not just the fruit but the leaves, stem and fibre into more than a dozen products — and the whole venture can begin with as little as ₹100000.

Most people see a banana as nothing more than a fruit. In reality, a single banana plant can support more than a dozen separate businesses. Nowhere is this clearer than in Madhya Pradesh's Burhanpur district, where bananas are cultivated across 25000 hectares and farmers earn not only from the fruit but from the leaves, the stem and even the fibre.

One Plant, Many Income Streams

What makes the banana plant special is that almost every part of it has a buyer. The fruit sells on its own, the leaves serve as plates (pattal) for meals and can themselves be sold, and the crop can be processed into items like banana powder and chips. But the biggest opportunity lies in the fibre, which is now being turned into a surprising range of goods.

A Dozen Products From the Fibre

Speaking to the TrendKia team, expert farmer Sunil Mahajan said the banana is an ideal choice for anyone looking to start a venture. According to him, a single plant can be the basis for more than a dozen businesses — selling the fruit, selling the leaves, and running a separate trade in fibre-based products.

The list of items made from banana fibre is long. It is used to make caps, mobile covers and water bottles, and even sports and toy items. Watches are now being crafted from the fibre as well, and Mahajan says people are taking a real liking to them, while sarees too can be woven from the same material. He adds that demand for these banana-based products is strong not just within the country but abroad as well.

Start the Venture With ₹100000

The cost of entry is modest. Sunanda Bai, another expert, explained that anyone wanting to make caps, rakhis or other products from the fibre can launch the business with just ₹100000. The reason, she said, is that the banana is a fruit whose very stem can be sold, and in Burhanpur this raw material is easily available because bananas are grown here across 25000 hectares.

On the back of that small investment, Sunanda Bai said, earnings of ₹10 to 15000 a month can begin to flow in. With raw material in plenty, healthy market demand and a limited upfront cost, the humble banana plant — used wisely — can become a dependable source of income.
