A long-standing demand of western Rajasthan's rail passengers appears close to being met. Preparations for a new daily express train running from Lalgarh in Bikaner to Sabarmati in Gujarat have reached their final stage, with both railway officials and local authorities working at full pace. Indications are that the service could begin on June 21.
What makes the launch especially notable is that Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav is likely to travel to Bikaner himself to flag off the train. While the official programme is yet to be announced, the railway department says its own arrangements are now almost complete.
Why This New Link Matters
The train will create a direct rail connection between Bikaner and Gujarat's Ahmedabad region. Its impact is expected to go well beyond travel — trade, tourism and industrial activity are all expected to gain fresh momentum. Passengers from western Rajasthan will finally have a straightforward, direct route to a major commercial hub like Ahmedabad.
Those travelling for medical care, education and employment are also set to benefit substantially. The railways believe the service will play an important role in regional development and will fulfil a connectivity demand that has been pending for a long time.
Rising Passenger Demand Drove the Decision
According to railway officials, the daily express between Lalgarh and Sabarmati is being introduced in response to steadily rising passenger demand. With both passenger pressure and commercial movement growing in the Bikaner division, the need for a new train on this route had been felt for quite some time. Once the service starts, travellers will get relief from the shortage of options.
Beyond improved passenger facilities, the train is also expected to help freight movement and small traders. Businesspeople operating between Bikaner, Ahmedabad and the surrounding areas will be able to travel more conveniently, giving a boost to local industries as well.
Timetable and Stoppages Coming Soon
Railway administration has signalled that the detailed timetable and the list of halting stations will be released shortly. For now, arrangements relating to safety, track and operations are being finalised. The expectation is that passenger numbers on this route will see a healthy rise as soon as the service begins.
