Few sporting journeys capture the imagination of the global sporting fraternity quite as rapidly as a teenage sensation who shatters longstanding benchmarks within months of entering professional competition. Fifteen-year-old Indian batsman Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has accomplished that feat, earning a place on the prestigious annual TIME 100 Next list. Published by the American news magazine, the roster highlights rising leaders from across industries who are actively shaping the future. Sooryavanshi is not merely the only Indian athlete selected for the coveted compilation; he is also the youngest individual featured across the entire list.
Global Recognition in the Phenoms Category
The publication placed Sooryavanshi in its Phenoms category, highlighting his rapid ascent as one of the most dynamic and exhilarating figures in modern international sports. TIME chief executive officer Jessica Sibley noted that the figures on this year's roster are pushing boundaries, unlocking fresh opportunities, and advancing their respective disciplines and communities worldwide. Among the honorees, only seven athletes across the globe secured entry, with the Indian teenager leading the cohort in youthful prominence.
From Ranji Trophy Debut to IPL Breakthrough
Sooryavanshi's meteoric rise gained serious momentum in 2024 when he stepped onto the senior stage to make his Ranji Trophy debut at just 12 years old. Becoming one of the youngest Indians ever to play first-class cricket, his raw capability quickly caught the attention of domestic scouts. Ahead of the IPL 2025 campaign, Rajasthan Royals acquired him at the tournament auction for a bid of 1 crore rupees. In his debut campaign in the competitive twenty-over tournament, he accumulated 252 runs across seven innings. The centerpiece of that run was a blistering 35-ball century against Gujarat Titans, which registered as the fastest IPL hundred by an Indian batsman at the time.
Dominating Year Two and Eclipsing Chris Gayle
During his sophomore season, Sooryavanshi shouldered full-time batting duties for Rajasthan Royals with extraordinary consistency. He piled up 776 runs over the course of the tournament, bolstered by one century and five half-centuries, to emerge as the leading run-getter of the season. His power-hitting was on full display as he launched 72 sixes across 16 fixtures. That barrage surpassed the longstanding benchmark established by T20 icon Chris Gayle by a margin of 20 sixes, rewriting the tournament's power-hitting record books.
Senior International Cap and Surpassing Sachin Tendulkar
That domestic run paved the way for senior national selection in July, when Sooryavanshi made his international debut for India in a T20 international against England in Manchester. By walking onto the pitch at 15 years of age, he became the youngest male cricketer ever to play for India at the senior international level, overtaking the historic record held for decades by batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar. Through six career T20 internationals, Sooryavanshi has totaled 193 runs, highlighted by a top score of 81 against Zimbabwe, while also earning selection for India's Asian Games squad competing in Japan.
Fastest List A Fifty and Growing Responsibilities
In only his third season of senior cricket, the left-handed stroke-maker continued setting unprecedented marks across different formats. During the India A tri-series final against Sri Lanka A at Colombo in June, he hammered a half-century off just 11 deliveries, registering the fastest List A fifty in world cricket history. Reflecting his increasing stature in domestic circles, selectors named him vice-captain of the victorious East Zone squad during the Duleep Trophy in August.
Fellow Sporting Honorees on the Global List
Sooryavanshi is featured alongside a select group of six international athletes on the list, including American quarterback Arch Manning, NBA guard Tyrese Maxey, women's football defender Naomi Girma, striker Folarin Balogun, tennis competitor Alexandra Eala, and basketball guard Olivia Miles. Emerging from a small town in Bihar to achieve global sports acclaim, Sooryavanshi has demonstrated that age presents no barrier to elite success, establishing himself as a significant figure in the present and future of Indian cricket.
