Questions regarding selection within the Pakistan cricket team have surfaced once again. Amid swift alterations made to the squad right before the commencement of the Test series against Sri Lanka, captain Babar Azam has clarified that selecting players or dropping them from the team is not within his purview. He stated that his sole duty is to extract the best possible performance from the players handed over to him by the selectors and the coaching staff.
Speaking to the media a day prior to the opening Test in Rawalpindi, Babar mentioned that while he certainly offers his opinion on team selection, the final verdict rests entirely with the selectors and the coaching staff. He reiterated that he is given a squad of 15 players, and preparing them to face opponents while delivering match-winning performances is his core responsibility. Selecting or omitting players is not in his hands, and the management has provided a team that he must ready for competition.
Elaborating further, Babar noted that he speaks openly about his role and shares his perspective before the selectors and coaches carry out their duties. However, he added that he cannot publicly disclose the exact boundaries of his involvement or the matters in which he holds no sway.
Squad Shakeup Ahead of the Series
The adjustments made to the Pakistan squad ahead of the Test series against Sri Lanka have generated considerable discussion. Interestingly, this marks the second consecutive Test series where modifications have been made even after the squad was officially announced. In less than 48 hours before the first Test on Saturday, Abdullah Fazal and Ali Usman were dropped from the setup, while four new players were inducted, three of whom have yet to make their debut in Test cricket.
A Youthful Composition for the Team<
Prior to this, right before the third Test against England, Pakistan had abruptly dropped seven players to accommodate seven fresh faces. During that period, both the head coach and bowling coach were removed from their positions. Babar, however, defended the decision to introduce youngsters into the side. According to him, Pakistan is currently striving to build a better equilibrium between seasoned campaigners and young talent, noting that the team is quite youthful and they have attempted to forge a solid blend of senior and junior players.
