Popular meme cryptocurrency Pepe (PEPE) is holding steady on Tuesday following a 5% loss the previous day, remaining constrained below its 50-day Exponential Moving Average (EMA) at $0.00000285. A drop in speculative retail demand has intensified downside warnings for the asset. Technical structure reveals that PEPE is balancing near a crucial support floor, where a decisive breakdown could unlock roughly 20% downside risk.
Derivatives Markets Point to Fading Retail Enthusiasm
The modest recovery in retail interest observed over the preceding three weeks appears to be unwinding rapidly. Data from CoinGlass reveals that Monday's 5% price decline occurred alongside a nearly 15% drop in PEPE futures Open Interest (OI). This reduction highlights a shrinking notional value of active perpetual contracts across derivative venues. Furthermore, the funding rate flipped into negative territory at -0.0081%, reinforcing a distinctly bearish bias among active market participants.
On-Chain Whale Offloading Increases Exchange Liquidity
On-chain analytics reflect declining conviction among major token holders and institutional addresses. According to Santiment data, the overall balance held by top wallet addresses dropped to 164.65 trillion PEPE on Monday, down from 171.12 trillion PEPE on June 30. Similarly, top non-exchange addresses scaled down their holdings to 85.19 trillion PEPE, compared to 86.38 trillion PEPE on July 1.
Concurrently, the circulating supply on cryptocurrency exchanges grew to 18.94 trillion PEPE, up from 18.62 trillion PEPE recorded last week. Combined, these on-chain shifts indicate that large token holders are reducing their exposure and moving funds onto trading platforms, creating potential overhead sell pressure for the token.
Technical Structure and Critical Price Thresholds
Pepe maintains an explicitly bearish short-term bias as long as spot prices trade under key moving averages. The token remains comfortably below both its 50-day EMA at $0.00000285 and its 100-day EMA at $0.00000311. Momentum indicators align with this subdued price action. While the Directional Moving Index (DMI) shows the positive DI line resting above the negative DI line, the Average Directional Index (ADX) line has descended to 18, signalling that bullish trend strength has effectively evaporated.
On the upside, the 50-day EMA ($0.00000285) and 100-day EMA ($0.00000311) serve as immediate technical resistance hurdles, followed by the 50% retracement mark at $0.00000341. A breakdown below immediate support could trigger the projected 20% sell-off sequence.
Broader Crypto Sell-Off and Macro Liquidity Concerns
Pepe's weakness comes amid broader market fragility across major digital assets. Leading altcoins such as Ripple, Cardano, and Solana continue to trade lower. This market-wide drawdown coincides with Citadel Securities' projection of a potential surprise Federal Reserve interest rate hike, which threatens to drain liquidity from speculative assets.
Ripple and Stellar face ongoing downside pressure on Tuesday after suffering daily losses of over 4% and over 5% on Monday, respectively. Weakening momentum and derivatives metrics indicate persistent seller control over both altcoins. Meanwhile, Bitcoin continues to drift lower, extending its previous daily decline of more than 2%. Over $600 million in leveraged positions were liquidated across the crypto ecosystem in the last 24 hours, with Artificial Superintelligence Alliance and Shiba Inu ranking among the hardest-hit assets.
