Monsoon Speeds Up as Storms Lash the North: IMD's State-by-State Forecast for the Next 7 Days

The weather department says northern India faces strong winds and dust storms even as the southwest monsoon advances rapidly, bringing rain to a string of states. Here is how the next week is shaping up across the country.

India's weather is wearing two very different faces right now. Across parts of the north and centre, gusty winds, dust storms and lingering heat are the story; elsewhere, the southwest monsoon is picking up pace and soaking one new region after another. The weather department has issued a fresh state-by-state outlook for the days ahead, ranging from heavy-rain warnings to heatwave alerts. Here is what the next seven days hold for your area.

Delhi-NCR: Relief Today, Warnings Alongside

The national capital and its surrounding areas saw light rain accompanied by strong winds on Monday, a welcome break that turned the weather pleasant. That relief, however, came wrapped in caution — the weather department issued both a 'Red' and an 'Orange' alert for the same day, with winds in Delhi expected to gust at 60 to 80 kilometres per hour.

The road ahead stays mixed. A dust storm and light showers are likely on 15 and 16 June. But the cool spell should not be mistaken for a lasting one: the department says temperatures could climb by 2 to 4 degrees by 18 June, pushing the mercury back up to between 40 and 42°C.

How Far the Monsoon Has Reached

The southwest monsoon is moving briskly this season. According to the weather department, it has already entered fresh stretches of Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand and Bihar. Its current edge has stretched to cities such as Solapur, Hyderabad, Ranchi and Muzaffarpur. Over the next three to four days, it is expected to cover all of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh and the remaining parts of Bihar.

Storms and Heat Haven't Eased Yet

Even with rain on the way, some regions will see the weather turn sharp.

  • Parts of Rajasthan, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh could face dust storms with winds of 60 to 100 kilometres per hour.
  • Several areas in central and southern India will keep battling the heat. A heatwave is feared in Telangana and the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra over the next two to three days.

States Set for Rain

A large swathe of the country is in for wet weather this week. Here is the state-wise picture—

  • Northeast: Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and the hilly belts of West Bengal could receive very heavy rain over the next six to seven days. In the past 24 hours, Kokrajhar in Assam alone recorded 12 centimetres of rain.
  • Northern hill states: Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand will see spells of rain between 15 and 21 June, with heavy rain expected in Jammu and Kashmir from 18 to 21 June.
  • Northern plains: Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Uttar Pradesh are also likely to get thunderstorms with rain this week.
  • Eastern India: Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha will see rain this week, with a heavy-rain alert for Bihar specifically on 16 and 19 June.
  • Central India: Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh could get intermittent rain through the week.
  • South and west: Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Goa and Maharashtra are expected to see moderate to heavy rain this week.

All told, the coming week looks set to be an active one for most of the country — heavy rain bringing relief in some places, while storms and heat keep others on alert.
