Back on the FIFA World Cup stage after a long absence, Scotland made their return count. In their Group C clash they edged out Haiti 1-0, with the only goal of the night coming from John McGinn, who found the back of the net in the 28th minute.
McGinn’s Decisive Strike
The goal owed a little to good fortune. A deflection off a Haiti defender sent the ball straight into McGinn’s path, and he wasted no time, beating goalkeeper Johnny Placide to slot it home. That single moment ultimately proved to be the difference in the match.
A Long Drought Ends
The result carried extra weight for Scotland. The team was appearing in the tournament for the first time since 1998, and the win delivered their first World Cup victory since 1990, when they had beaten Sweden 2-1.
Top of the Group Table
In the group’s other fixture, the much-fancied Brazil and Morocco played out a tightly contested 1-1 draw. As a result, Scotland’s three points lifted them to the top of the Group C standings.
Tartan Army Light Up the Stands
Gillette Stadium, located about 30 miles from Boston, was packed to capacity. Scotland’s supporters, known as the Tartan Army, turned out in huge numbers and created what looked like a wave of red inside the ground. The lead could have come even earlier—in the 17th minute captain Scott McTominay had a clear chance, but his shot clipped the top of the post and went wide.
Haiti Threaten Too
Playing in the World Cup for the first time since 1974, Haiti carved out some promising openings in the second half. In the 74th minute Ruben Providence delivered a fine cross to Wilson Isidor, but the forward could not convert it. Ten minutes later, in the 84th minute, Frantzdy Pierrot’s header drifted wide on the left. Despite the loss, Haiti are still waiting for their first-ever World Cup point.
What Comes Next
Scotland will take on Morocco on Friday at the same Gillette Stadium, while Haiti face a tough test the same day against Brazil in Philadelphia.
