Married on Forged Papers, Then Vanished: How Himachal Police Trapped a 'Bride' and Her Middlewoman in a Marriage-Fraud Racket

In Himachal Pradesh's Hamirpur district, a woman who allegedly married a man using fake documents and then disappeared has been arrested, along with the middlewoman who arranged the match, after police laid a trap. The victim says the wedding cost him around seven lakh rupees.

Another case of fraud carried out in the name of marriage has come to light in Himachal Pradesh, this time in the Galod area that falls under the Badsar police station near Hamirpur district. Here, a woman married on the strength of forged documents slipped away from her husband's home within days — but police have now arrested both her and the middlewoman who brokered the match.

How the case began

According to complainant Manish Kumar, his marriage took place in February 2026 in Amritsar, Punjab. Soon after the wedding, he grew suspicious of his wife's documents. When they were examined, they turned out to be fake. The moment Manish raised the issue, he and his family began receiving threats to their lives.

She left home — but headed elsewhere

Manish says the wedding cost him around seven lakh rupees, and he has asked police to help recover the money. The woman had left home four days earlier saying she was going to Jammu, but instead of reaching Jammu she turned up in Batala, Punjab. Her mobile number then started coming up switched off, deepening the suspicion.

The trap police set

Sensing how serious the matter was, police opened an investigation and tried to trace the woman's location, but had no success. Eventually they set a trap and got her to come to Badsar on some pretext. The ploy worked — she arrived at Badsar and was arrested there. The middlewoman who had played the role of go-between in the match was also taken into custody.

What the police said

Hamirpur Superintendent of Police Balvir Singh Thakur said cases of cheating in the name of marriage have been surfacing across the district. He said a woman named Sheetal was recently arrested in another case registered in Badsar. She is accused of marrying men, defrauding them and then absconding.

The SP added that the same woman had also cheated complainant Manish, and that the investigation revealed she had gone through several marriages before this.

A warning to the public

Balvir Singh Thakur appealed to people to thoroughly verify every detail before finalising a marriage alliance and to seek police help immediately at the slightest doubt. He specifically cautioned that extra care must be taken when a relationship is being arranged through middlemen.
