Madhya Pradesh's revered pilgrimage town of Omkareshwar is about to look very different in the years ahead. With lakhs of devotees expected to descend on it during Simhastha-2028, the state has begun preparing well in advance. At a meeting of the cabinet committee held in Bhopal under Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav, a long list of development projects for the temple town was given the green light.
Why the heavy investment
The decision to push large-scale work here is driven by the steadily rising number of pilgrims and the need to improve what they find when they arrive. Every one of these projects shares a single goal — to give the lakhs of visitors expected during Simhastha-2028 far better arrangements for movement, parking, health and safety, and to make the town look modern and well-organised.
Rs 160 crore for the temple, a separate budget for roads
The single biggest share goes to the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga temple complex. Roughly Rs 160 crore will be spent on developing and beautifying it, easing the flow of devotees through the temple area and giving religious tourism a fresh identity.
Alongside this, CC roads will be built in the municipal council area at a cost of Rs 12.63 crore to make the streets stronger and dust-free. To smooth traffic further, a Railway Over-Bridge (ROB) will come up on the Omkareshwar Road–Sanawad route at a cost of Rs 9.23 crore, freeing commuters from the jams that pile up at the railway crossing.
A lasting fix for the parking crunch
Vehicle pressure runs heavy during Simhastha, and to address it a multilevel parking facility will be built at a cost of Rs 24.99 crore, complete with a food court, toilets and an administrative building. On top of that, a three-storey parking plan has been approved for the Kuber Bhandari area. Together, these two projects are expected to take much of the sting out of the town's parking problem.
Stronger health and emergency services
To bolster medical facilities, the hospital building will be upgraded, staff quarters will be constructed, and the hospital will be fitted with modern amenities. For faster response in emergencies, a new helipad will be built in Omkareshwar, speeding up both air-ambulance services and disaster management.
A dedicated authority and alternative routes
The Chief Minister has also ordered the setting up of a separate development authority to coordinate work across the Omkareshwar, Barwah and Khedighat areas. This is meant to keep projects in Khandwa and Khargone districts moving and ensure they are completed on schedule. With traffic pressure rising, a plan to develop alternative routes is also being worked out so that pilgrims are spared from jams during Simhastha.
Taken together, these projects are not just about making Simhastha-2028 a success. They are expected to set a new direction for religious tourism in Omkareshwar in the coming years and completely transform the face of the pilgrimage town.
