Domestic equity benchmarks staged an impressive turnaround on Friday, October 9, reversing the sharp slide witnessed in the preceding session and bringing relief across the trading floor. Buying interest gathered momentum right through the final session of the trading week, driving major gauges to finish with substantial gains. By the closing bell, the Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex closed higher by nearly 880 points, while the National Stock Exchange Nifty firmly crossed above the 22,500 threshold. Strong momentum across information technology, fast-moving consumer goods, and financial services counters served as the primary growth engine behind the broad-based market recovery.
Benchmark Movement and Trading Breadth
Both primary indices ended comfortably in positive territory at the end of Friday's trade. The BSE Sensex settled at the 72,472 mark, advancing by 879 points or 1.23 percent. Simultaneously, the NSE Nifty rallied 289 points or 1.30 percent to finish at 22,520. Market breadth remained firmly titled towards buyers, reflecting broad optimism across participant groups. Overall advancing stocks numbered 2,344 on the exchanges, significantly outpacing the 1,686 counters that finished in the red. Meanwhile, the volatility gauge India VIX retreated by 6.09 percent to hover around the 14.00 mark, signaling easing market anxieties and building stability.
Sectoral Action Led by Tech and Consumer Stocks
Nearly every major sectoral index ended the session in the green, demonstrating broad participation across industry baskets. Information technology counters led the sector scorecard, registering an impressive jump of 3.02 percent (3.31 percent). Solid gains were also visible in the FMCG segment, which advanced 2.25 percent, while Nifty PSU Bank climbed 1.62 percent and Nifty Services gained 1.79 percent. Broader market baskets kept pace as well, with the midcap index ending higher by 1.46 percent and the smallcap index recording a 0.55 percent improvement.
Top Index Gainers and Laggards
Among the top performers on the Nifty index, Apollo Hospitals led the advance with a jump of 4.72 percent. Substantial buying was also witnessed in ITC, which rose 4.31 percent, followed by Eicher Motors with a 4.17 percent climb, TCS adding 3.85 percent, HCL Tech gaining 3.38 percent, and Adani Ports moving up 3.10 percent. On the losing side, market breadth was so strong that only select names faced selling pressure. Modest declines were confined to Cipla, which fell 0.44 percent, alongside JSW Steel sliding 0.61 percent and Reliance Industries shedding 0.65 percent by market close.
