Congress Says Indian Officer Died on Stranded Ship in Oman, Slams Centre Over Delay in Bringing Body Home

Congress claimed that Indian second officer Nishant Urthanathan died on June 11 aboard a ship stranded in Oman, and that his body has still not reached India two to three days later.

India's main opposition party, Congress (@INCIndia), has used a post on the social media platform X to accuse the central government of failing to act after the death of an Indian citizen abroad. The party says the body of an Indian officer who died on a stranded ship overseas has still not been returned to his home country.

What Happened

According to the post, Nishant Urthanathan, an Indian second officer serving on a ship stranded in Oman, died on June 11. Congress claims that in the two to three days since the incident, his body has been waiting to be brought back to India, yet no concrete help has come from the Modi government during this time.

A Struggle to Preserve the Body

Describing the situation as deeply distressing, the party said the delay has caused the deceased's body to begin decomposing. In the meantime, his colleagues aboard the ship are reportedly trying to keep the body intact using bottles of cold water, in an effort to stop its condition from worsening.

Attack on the Government

By raising the case, Congress has questioned the government machinery meant to protect and assist Indian citizens caught in difficult circumstances abroad. The party suggests that the family and colleagues of a deceased Indian did not receive the kind of support they should have been given.

Public Reaction

The post drew sharp responses from social media users, with many expressing anger over the government's alleged inaction and questioning why Indians stranded abroad were not being looked after. Some framed it as a matter of responsibility toward a citizen and demanded swift action.
