Mamata Shakes Up TMC: Sayoni Ghosh Removed, Kunal Ghosh Handed North Kolkata as Rebellion Deepens

Reeling from an assembly election defeat and an open internal revolt, the Trinamool Congress has overhauled its organisation — dropping Sayoni Ghosh as youth wing chief while handing new roles to Kunal Ghosh and Saugata Roy.

A reshuffle forced by defeat and revolt

Still smarting from a heavy loss in the recent assembly election, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is passing through one of the toughest phases in its history. Simmering discontent inside the party has now boiled over into open rebellion, with sharp questions being raised over the leadership itself. To steady the ship, the party has announced a series of significant organisational changes. The decisions followed a meeting of senior leaders at party supremo Mamata Banerjee's residence on Saturday, and are widely read as an attempt to tighten the grip on an organisation under strain.

Who moved up, who was eased out

The most talked-about change is the removal of Sayoni Ghosh as president of the Youth Trinamool Congress. In a contrasting move, Kunal Ghosh — known for his outspoken style — has been named president of the North Kolkata district unit. Alongside this, veteran MP Saugata Roy has been appointed as the party's advisor in the Lok Sabha. The shake-up comes at a moment when the party is battling the deepest internal crisis it has ever faced, with dissent no longer whispered behind closed doors but voiced openly by a sizeable bloc of rebel leaders.

Why handing North Kolkata to Kunal Ghosh matters

Giving Kunal Ghosh charge of North Kolkata is being seen as a calculated political move. Until now, the unit was run by a core committee headed by senior MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay. And that is exactly where the intrigue lies — on Saturday, Sudip Bandyopadhyay had signed the very letter through which the rebel camp is seeking recognition as a separate group within the TMC. Against this backdrop, placing the unit in Kunal Ghosh's hands is being read as a clear political message from Mamata Banerjee.

Sharpening the parliamentary game with Saugata Roy

By making Saugata Roy an advisor in the Lok Sabha, the party has signalled its intent to strengthen its strategy on the parliamentary front. His long experience is expected to prove valuable in navigating the challenges facing the party both inside and outside the House. Saturday's meeting was attended by several senior figures, including Abhishek Banerjee and Kalyan Banerjee. The leadership held detailed discussions on the current situation and deliberated on ways to rebuild the organisation.

The rebel challenge in the Lok Sabha

Meanwhile, the party's troubles only appear to be mounting. The rebel faction led by Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar claims it has the backing of 19 of the party's 28 Lok Sabha MPs. This group has decided to meet Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and press its demand to be recognised as the 'real' TMC. The rebels allege that the current leadership has become cut off from ordinary people and grassroots workers. The TMC leadership, on the other hand, is firmly contesting these claims and working to reinforce its hold over the organisation.

From the assembly to resignations — cracks everywhere

The crisis is not confined to the Lok Sabha. The TMC has taken a major hit in the West Bengal Assembly too. Here, 64 of its 80 MLAs have broken away and have even secured recognition from the Assembly Speaker. Rebel leader Ritabrata Banerjee has been recognised as the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, though a legal battle over the decision is under way, with the matter challenged in the Calcutta High Court. Adding to the turmoil, former minister Manas Bhunia has resigned from the party. The steady stream of resignations and defections has left Mamata Banerjee facing her biggest test yet — holding the organisation together.
