With iOS 27, Apple is sending a clear message: it is in no hurry to push your years-old iPhone into retirement. The update doesn't just make older handsets noticeably quicker — it stretches their useful life. And behind the engineering sits a deliberate business calculation.
How much faster, exactly
The list of tweaks runs long — PDFs now save faster, and the camera opens more quickly when you're in Low Power Mode. But the standout gains are in the bigger numbers.
- App launches: up to 30 percent faster, as measured on an iPhone 11 Pro Max.
- AirDrop transfers: up to 80 percent faster, tested on an iPhone 16 Plus.
- Photo library: jumping into your library right after taking a shot loads images up to 70 percent faster, tested on an iPhone 15.
On top of that, the iPhone now switches more intelligently between cellular and Wi-Fi networks. Apple has also rebuilt the engine behind search in Spotlight, Photos, and Mail, so ideally you find exactly what you're looking for on the very first attempt.
What makes the old phones quicker
Many of these wins come down to optimizations in the iPhone's CPU scheduler. It's a standard piece of any operating system that coordinates work for the CPU, directing the traffic of apps and services so that whatever you're focused on at that moment runs smoothly and fast. Apple's most advanced CPU scheduler lives in its newest devices, but the team has carried many of those algorithm improvements all the way down to the iPhone 11 through iOS 27.
The real math behind Apple's generosity
Keeping older devices updated for as long as possible serves Apple's own interests. Francisco Jeronimo, vice president for Data and Analytics at research firm IDC, points out that consumers don't want to feel pushed into replacing their smartphone. Holding on to a device for longer is one less worry and better value for money — particularly now, when people are spending more on phones than ever before.
“This is a big differentiator between iOS and Android,” Jeronimo says. “Because consumers now know that if they buy an iOS device, it will last longer, and it will retain value at the end when they decide to upgrade. An Android device—after two, three years, depending on the brand—they will not be able to get upgrades anymore. The device will lose value if they want to upgrade, and they will not be able to sell it at a higher price.”
Apple usually supports its devices for six to seven years, while only a handful of Android makers such as Google and Samsung promise anything close to that.
Longer support, bigger spending
If people keep their phones around longer, staying on the latest software also nudges those same owners toward buying more Apple gear. They might pick up an Apple Watch or a pair of AirPods to go with the phone, Jeronimo notes.
Even more important for Apple, it raises the incentive to subscribe to the company's growing roster of services — Fitness+, Apple TV, Apple Music, and the rest. In April, Apple reported that its services business hit an all-time revenue record of $31 billion.
“No one will criticize them if they weren't able to support [the iPhone 11],” Jeronimo says. “But they clearly want to support all their devices because they know that means a lot in terms of brand value, and for consumers to know that when they buy their products, their products last, and that's critical.”
The catch you should know about
Here's the caveat: even though these older iPhones stay supported, they won't get to use several of the marquee features arriving in iOS 27. Every Apple Intelligence feature — including the brand-new Siri AI experience that finally claims to make the assistant genuinely useful — is limited to the iPhone 15 Pro or newer. So if you want a smarter Siri, or you want to lean on AI to spruce up your photos, you'll finally have to upgrade.
