The brutal killing of sadhu Milan Das in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao district has taken a major turn. Police shot dead the prime accused in the case, Israel, who carried a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head. The action unfolded near the Tajpur underpass in the Bangarmau Kotwali area, where the absconding Israel came face to face with a police team. In the exchange of fire, the wanted criminal was killed, while an SOG constable was also injured. A country-made pistol (tamancha) and a knife were recovered from the accused.
How the Sadhu Was Killed
The case dates back to 9 June, when Milan Das was stabbed to death. Milan Singh Raghuvanshi, alias Baba Milan Das, lived in an under-construction temple. On Tuesday, his body was found inside this very temple in Ramnagar village of the Bangarmau police station area. The victim's body bore knife wounds all over, pointing to the savagery of the attack. According to reports, Baba Milan Das was the youngest of five brothers.
Anger Erupted After the Murder
As news of the incident spread, large numbers of villagers rushed to the temple. The family and police were informed, after which a forensic team reached the spot and collected evidence. Enraged by the sadhu's killing, locals took to the streets, blocking the Hardoi-Unnao road and launching a protest. Seeing the situation worsen, the police team reached the scene and, with great difficulty, calmed the agitated crowd. The body was then sent for a post-mortem. The murder had sparked tension across the area, and police had to work hard to bring the situation under control.
Investigation and Arrests
To crack the case, SSP JP Singh deployed several police teams. A case was registered on the complaint of the victim's brother, naming Lalli, Israel, Yameen and Shanu Shafi. The investigating police began combing through CCTV footage from nearby cameras and conducted raids to track down the accused. Lalli, Shafi and Yameen were detained and questioned, while Israel remained on the run. He was finally cornered and killed in the encounter near the Tajpur underpass.
