BJP Youth Leader Vinod Kashyap Killed in Dehradun: Bulldozers Raze Accused's Homes, Internet Shut Down as Tension Grips Sahaspur

BJP Yuva Morcha leader Vinod Kashyap was killed with sharp weapons in Dehradun's Sahaspur area, triggering communal tension, bulldozer demolitions at the accused's homes, 13 named suspects, four detentions and a city-wide internet shutdown.

A minor altercation in Bairagiwala, under the Sahaspur Kotwali area near Uttarakhand's capital Dehradun, spiralled out of control on Saturday and left a young BJP leader dead. The deceased, Vinod Kashyap (45), is said to have been associated with the BJP's Yuva Morcha and had earlier contested a BDC election. His killing pushed communal tension in the region to a peak, as one side in the clash belonged to the Hindu community and the other to the Muslim community.

How the attack unfolded

The dispute is reported to have stemmed from a money transaction and an old rivalry. Vinod had gone to irrigate his field in Bairagiwala when a group — including the nephew of former village head Ispak — attacked him with sticks and sharp weapons. His brothers Ashok and Rajesh were also badly wounded in the assault. All three were rushed to hospital, but Vinod succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Harbertpur, while three other family members remained in serious condition.

A disturbing CCTV clip of the incident has also surfaced, clearly showing the accused brutally attacking Vinod and his companions. The bloody clash, which followed a small late-evening argument, ultimately cost Vinod his life.

13 named, four detained

A total of 13 people have been named in the case, including Razak, Intiyaz, Salman and Aman, and an FIR has been registered against all of them. Every accused has been on the run since the incident. Police have so far detained four people, and six teams have been deployed to track down the suspects. Vigilance has also been stepped up in neighbouring border areas to prevent the accused from slipping across.

Bulldozers, arson and stone-pelting at the accused's homes

After the killing, Hindu organisations demanded an encounter of the accused and the demolition of their homes. A bulldozer subsequently reached an accused's house amid heavy police presence and began razing it. The accused's property is described as quite large, and officials believe the entire house could be levelled by evening. During the demolition, large crowds gathered outside, filming the action on their phones, while chants of "Jai Shri Ram" echoed through the area and police were stationed at every corner.

The situation worsened when members of the Bajrang Dal and Hindu organisations set fire to the accused's house. A fire brigade team rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control. Tension also spread to Vikasnagar, where protesters were seen indulging in arson and stone-pelting. Given the rising tension, internet services in Dehradun have been suspended.

Tough stand from CM Dhami and BJP MLA

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami appeared visibly stern after the incident and ordered the harshest possible action against the accused. "No matter who the criminal is, he will not escape," he said. BJP MLA Munna Singh struck an equally aggressive note: "The action against the accused will be such that their generations will remember it. They will not be forgiven at all."

Family's warning and public anger

The failure to arrest the accused has fuelled intense anger among locals. The family has warned bluntly that even after the post-mortem, the body will not be cremated until the killers are arrested. Furious protesters blocked the highway demanding immediate arrests. The protesting Hindu organisations further warned that if no action was taken by 10 am, they would protest with the body.

Bairagiwala turned into a police fortress

With the situation threatening to spin out of control, the entire Bairagiwala area was turned into a police cantonment. Senior officers stayed put at the spot with a heavy force and, after great difficulty, calmed the agitated crowd by assuring them of action. Police promised a fair investigation, after which the streets quietened down, though officers kept guard through the night. A TrendKia team also remained at the scene until late into the night.

Speaking on the case, ASP Pankaj Gairola said some people were attacked with sharp weapons and hammers during the dispute, leaving four seriously injured, one of whom died during treatment. He added that a heavy police force has been deployed in view of the tension in the area following the incident.
