An arson attempt targeted the residence of former Bangladesh cricket captain and former lawmaker Shakib Al Hasan in Magura, just hours after he participated in an online international media event addressed by ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Unidentified individuals attempted to set fire to his ancestral house late on Wednesday night. The incident occurred shortly after Sheikh Hasina delivered a virtual address declaring her firm resolve to return to Bangladesh in December to restore order and lead the nation back onto the right path.
Arson Attempt at Magura Residence
According to details provided by local police authorities, the criminal incident took place late Wednesday night at Shakib Al Hasan's property located in the Magura region. Shakib Al Hasan previously represented the Magura-1 constituency as a Member of Parliament. Unknown miscreants approached the premises and attempted to set the residential structure ablaze. Timely intervention helped avert major destruction to the house. The attack occurred just hours after Shakib virtually joined the media conference that was addressed by the deposed leader Sheikh Hasina.
Virtual Address from New Delhi and Sheikh Hasina's Declaration
The media event attended by Shakib Al Hasan was organized in New Delhi by the Foreign Correspondents' Club of South Asia. The virtual conference drew a large audience of journalists, political figures, and international observers. Speaking remotely to the gathering, Sheikh Hasina outlined her political plans for Bangladesh. She announced her determination to return to her country in December to guide Bangladesh back onto the right track. Addressing potential threats, she stated,
"I know, they can put me in jail or take my life; I will go back home to be with my people."
Murder Charges Filed Following Political Upheaval
The arson attack on Shakib's property follows months of political turbulence and legal scrutiny. After the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government, widespread protests and violent clashes erupted across Bangladesh, leading to numerous deaths. As part of subsequent legal proceedings, law enforcement agencies registered cases against prominent figures. Shakib Al Hasan was named as an accused in a murder case filed in early August alongside 147 individuals. The list of accused in that case included Sheikh Hasina herself, as well as several former cabinet ministers and former parliamentarians from her political party.
Absence During Unrest and Evolving Security Concerns
Despite his inclusion in the murder case, official records established that Shakib Al Hasan was not present in Bangladesh at any point during the violent anti-government demonstrations on August 5. He was outside the country throughout that period of political turmoil. Nevertheless, following the shift in governance, his name was incorporated into the official charges. His recent participation in the New Delhi virtual event appears to have sparked renewed hostility, leading to the late-night attack at his Magura-1 home. Police are actively investigating the arson attempt to identify those responsible.
