Tehran has reacted strongly to the outcomes of the US midterm elections, interpreting the shifting balance of power in Washington as a direct public referendum against military confrontation. With congressional control changing hands amid ongoing debates over the war involving Iran, Iranian officials welcomed the political setback faced by the administration.
Parliament Speaker Reacts on Social Media
Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the speaker of the Iranian parliament and a senior negotiator, addressed the election results directly in a public statement. Writing on social media platform X, Ghalibaf stated, "Whether driven by conscience or the rising cost of living, Americans have said no to war, and we endorse this message." He argued that public fatigue with aggressive foreign intervention and the domestic economic burden of conflict played a decisive role in the outcome.
Warning Issued to Washington
Ghalibaf issued a stern caution to American leadership regarding how they interpret the electorate's stance. He warned that if the government betrays the public will by persisting with warfare, it will face severe repercussions. He remarked that Washington would soon understand that this public rejection could turn into an enduring nightmare for its policymakers.
Election Fallout and the Iran Conflict
The midterm contest saw Republicans lose control of both legislative chambers, marking a dramatic shift in congressional authority. In his post-election remarks, Donald Trump identified the war with Iran as the single biggest factor behind the electoral defeat, even remarking that he would become a political pundit following the outcome. Despite procedural hurdles on election day, including ballot scanner problems in New York and polling station relocations caused by flooding in Florida, the final vote has intensified scrutiny over American overseas military engagements.
