Newborns in Tamil Nadu Government Hospitals to Receive One Gram Gold Ring

The Tamil Nadu government has launched a unique initiative to gift a one-gram gold ring to newborns delivered in state-run medical facilities.

Newborn infants delivered in government medical institutions across Tamil Nadu are set to receive a one-gram gold ring as a special gift. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has introduced this novel initiative to bolster public confidence in state-run healthcare facilities and further strengthen maternal and child health services. The scheme applies to infants born in government hospitals after June 22, 2026, and is widely viewed as a major transformation in the public healthcare framework.

Structure and Scope of the Initiative

Data indicates that approximately 7.80 lakh children are born annually in Tamil Nadu, with nearly 53 percent, amounting to 4.20 lakh deliveries, taking place in government hospitals. This distinctive program draws its inspiration from the traditional Tamil cultural practice known as 'Thaymaman Seer'. To facilitate the initial phase, authorities have already procured a total of 1,28,000 pure gold rings.
