Mirzapur: The Movie hit theatres on September 4 and has already got audiences talking about how its climax leaves the door wide open for a follow-up. Drawing inspiration from the first season of the popular Prime Video web series, the film tells an independent story while bringing back the same beloved characters. It opened to collections of around Rs 25 crore on its very first day, and the makers have now dropped a strong hint about what comes next.
A climax twist that points to a sequel
Longtime viewers know that in the series, both Munna Tripathi (Divyenndu) and Guddu Pandit (Ali Fazal) were in love with Sweety Gupta (Shriya Pilgaonkar), and Sweety eventually chose Guddu over Munna, a decision that became the core reason for their bitter rivalry. Mirzapur: The Movie reworks this familiar track with an entirely new spin. In the film's final stretch, Munna and Guddu are left stunned when they suddenly realise they are both in love with the very same woman. This revelation is widely expected to become the foundation of the next film's central conflict and the intense rivalry between the two men, with the makers likely to spin the love triangle into a fresh, thrilling twist in the next instalment. That said, there has been no official announcement of a sequel so far.
Rooted firmly in the original series
Mirzapur: The Movie is directed by Gurmeet Singh, marking his debut as a feature film director. The screenplay is written by Puneet Krishna, and the film is produced under Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar's banner Excel Entertainment. The story is built entirely around the world of the blockbuster web series Mirzapur. Pankaj Tripathi returns once again as Kaleen Bhaiya, Ali Fazal plays Guddu Pandit, and Divyenndu Sharma reprises the role of Munna Tripathi. One notable change stands out: the role of Bablu Pandit, played by Vikrant Massey in the series, is now taken on by Jitendra Kumar in the film.
A solid start at the box office
The film has made a strong start by collecting around Rs 25 crore on its opening day itself. For fans of the series, seeing Kaleen Bhaiya, Guddu and Munna reunite on the big screen has felt like a celebration, and the sequel hint tucked into the climax is now generating plenty of chatter on social media. Excel Entertainment has also shared glimpses related to the film on its official Instagram page, further fuelling audience curiosity. All eyes are now on whether the makers formally confirm a sequel in the coming days.
