Whenever Bollywood's finest comic actors come up for discussion, Manjot Singh's name sits near the top of the list. What makes his story stand out is that he began his acting journey with a film that handed him a Filmfare Critics Award on his very first attempt, a feat that rarely comes so early in any actor's career.
Born into a Punjabi Sikh family in Delhi
Manjot Singh was born on July 7, 1992, into a Punjabi Sikh family in New Delhi. His father, Paramjot Singh, works as an electrical engineer and also runs a business, while his mother, Amrit Kaur Singh, is a homemaker. Manjot completed his early education in Delhi itself before turning his attention toward acting.
A debut that brought instant recognition
In 2008, Manjot stepped into Bollywood with the film Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!. Right from his first film, his acting and screen presence caught the attention of both audiences and critics. That performance earned him the Filmfare Critics Award, an achievement considered significant for any actor just starting out.
A National Award winning film alongside Abhay Deol
The comedy film starred Abhay Deol in the lead role and went on to win the National Award for Best Popular Film. Besides Abhay Deol and Manjot Singh, the film also featured Paresh Rawal, Neetu Chandra, Manu Rishi, Richa Chadda and Archana Puran Singh in important roles.
He never looked back after that
Following his debut, Manjot Singh kept audiences entertained with his sharp comic timing across a string of films. His notable work includes Student of the Year, Fukrey, Fukrey Returns, Fukrey 3, Dream Girl, Dream Girl 2, Wild Wild Punjab, Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video, Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2, Udaan and Sapno Ki Rani. He brought a distinct flavour to each of these roles.
He also made his mark on television
Beyond films, Manjot Singh has also appeared in the third season of the popular stunt reality show Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi, where his unique style entertained viewers all over again.
Two jobless years followed Fukrey's success
Very few people know that despite delivering a blockbuster like Fukrey, Manjot Singh could not land a good role for nearly two years afterward. He has said that waiting for the right opportunity during that dry spell was not easy at all.
A firm favourite with audiences today
Today, Manjot Singh is counted among the Bollywood actors who have carved out their own space in the industry through strong comic timing and effortless acting. He has managed to entertain audiences with every new project, which explains his considerable fan following. His entry in films would often set theatres erupting in applause.
