In the Malhar area of the Masturi block in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, a progressive farmer couple named Jadunandan Prasad Verma and his wife Divya Verma have rewritten the narrative of modern farming through innovation and resilience. Having been involved in agriculture for approximately 22 years, this couple made a significant decision about ten years ago to abandon chemical-based farming in favor of natural and organic techniques. Today, their commitment to sustainable agriculture has not only revitalized the soil health of their land but has also paved the way for substantial financial success.
The Shift in Agricultural Practices
Jadunandan Prasad Verma and Divya Verma explain that they initially practiced traditional methods of farming. However, realizing the need for change, they began to explore new possibilities. The turning point arrived during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the public demand for healthy, safe, and nutritious food surged. During this period, the couple dedicated time to studying organic practices and modern agricultural technologies. This period of research sparked a transition that saw them diversify their produce beyond standard paddy cultivation, incorporating horticultural crops into their farm strategy.
Diverse Crops Bringing Recognition
The most distinctive feature of the couple's farm is the sheer variety of produce they cultivate. They have successfully cultivated apples on half an acre of land, an achievement that has garnered significant attention from the local community. Beyond apples, they grow strawberries, various colorful varieties of cauliflower, and a range of foreign fruits and vegetables. Their successful experiments prove that with the right scientific management and appropriate techniques, the cultivation of exotic crops is indeed possible in this region, setting a benchmark for fellow farmers.
Utilizing Organic Inputs
Jadunandan Verma insists on avoiding any form of synthetic fertilizers or chemical pesticides in his fields. His crop production relies entirely on organic resources such as cow dung manure, vermicompost, and Jivamrit. These methods have significantly reduced the cost of cultivation while simultaneously enhancing the fertility of the soil and improving the overall quality of the crops. By steering clear of toxic chemicals, the couple has ensured that their farming practices have no negative impact on the surrounding environment.
Financial Stability and Government Support
Cultivating approximately two acres of land, the couple generates an annual income between 2.5 and 3 lakh rupees. Jadunandan Verma notes that organic farming is more profitable as it significantly lowers input costs compared to chemical-intensive methods. In addition to their self-generated income, they receive regular support through the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana. They strategically use the funds received from this scheme to purchase organic inputs and modern agricultural equipment, which helps in streamlining their daily farm operations.
A Hub for Learning and Knowledge Sharing
Today, the farm of Jadunandan Verma has transformed into a center for learning. Farmers from various districts across the state, along with students from agricultural universities, regularly visit his fields to observe and learn about his organic techniques. Having acquired knowledge from training sessions, workshops, and awareness programs organized by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, he has successfully translated theory into practice. Verma believes that organic farming is not just a medium for production, but a legacy for future generations, ensuring healthy soil and a secure environment.
