With the festive period commencing in October, young jobseekers across the country are positioned to gain substantial earning opportunities. A recent study released by global technology and digital talent solutions provider NLB Services projects that roughly 2.5 lakh jobs are expected to open up during this year's festive surge. The report outlines that between two and 2.5 lakh seasonal and gig employment roles are likely to be created from July to December 2026, propelling overall hiring activity by 15 to 20 percent compared to standard operating periods.
Gig workers, who operate largely on temporary and flexible arrangements across sectors like online retail, are seeing strong demand as multiple industries prepare for their busiest commercial quarter. Businesses operating across e-commerce, quick commerce, retail, logistics, hospitality, travel, and consumer services are actively ramping up their human resource capabilities. Varun Sachdeva, Senior Vice President and APAC Head at NLB Services, pointed out that this annual window serves as an essential stress test for the Indian employment landscape. Employers are initiating outreach well ahead of time, moving away from conventional hiring epicenters to depend heavily on tech-enabled, resilient, and deployment-ready talent.
Shifting From Temporary Demand to Long-Term Talent Discovery
Explaining this evolution in employer strategy, Sachdeva noted that seasonal hiring is no longer treated as a momentary stopgap to navigate festive transaction spikes. Instead, organizations view this period as a vital pathway to tap fresh talent pools, evaluate worker productivity at scale, and lay the groundwork for long-term career placements. To execute this smoothly, enterprises begin structuring their workforce blueprints nearly 12 to 14 weeks before the peak festive demand sets in. This structured advance planning enables companies to curate dependable talent pipelines early, successfully mitigating the operational stress associated with short-notice hiring.
Tier-2 and Tier-3 Cities to Supply 45 Percent of Hiring Volume
The geographical distribution of festive recruitment has expanded considerably beyond premier metropolitan centres. Estimates show that nearly 45 percent of the total festive hiring volume is anticipated to originate from tier-2 and tier-3 urban centers, where hiring momentum is advancing at a rate of 25 to 30 percent. The rapid integration of e-commerce, quick commerce platforms, modern retail chains, and localized supply fulfillment infrastructure has accelerated staffing requirements in cities including Jaipur, Lucknow, Indore, Surat, Nagpur, Bhubaneswar, Coimbatore, Chandigarh, and Kochi.
Expanding Scope for Freshers, Women, and Technically Skilled Workers
The findings also emphasize that first-time job entrants and women are emerging as pivotal contributors within this seasonal workforce. As the broader gig economy matures across the nation, the underlying nature of roles is experiencing a clear structural upgrade. Hiring managers are no longer restricting seasonal intake strictly to non-technical operational tasks; instead, there is surging demand for skilled professionals who possess technical capabilities, digital fluency, and operational readiness to manage modern logistics and customer workflows.
