A major development has emerged for students in Delhi University, particularly those pursuing science or holding a deep interest in biology and life sciences. A highly advanced technological laboratory has officially commenced operations at Daulat Ram College in Delhi, aimed at playing a pivotal role in practical student research. While an older zebrafish laboratory previously existed on the campus, it lacked modern infrastructure and technological depth. The newly constructed facility is exceptionally advanced, offering significantly larger physical space to accommodate a greater number of researchers simultaneously. This upgraded setup has been formally designated as a skill development center.
Expansion and Ongoing Upgrades at the Center
The facility is slated to receive even more cutting-edge machinery in the near future, which will further amplify the research capabilities available to students. On the very first day of its operational opening, science students from Hindu College arrived at the premises to explore the laboratory and immediately commenced hands-on research activities alongside their academic tour.
Understanding Drosophila and Zebrafish Models
Professor Dr. Padmashree Mudgal, the key academic figure behind the establishment of this laboratory, provided detailed insights into the project's evolution. She noted that although a previous lab existed at Daulat Ram College, it had grown outdated and suffered from spatial constraints. The newly built facility overcomes these limitations, providing expansive space and ample opportunities for student researchers. Continuous workshops are currently underway, running from morning until evening, where students are thoroughly briefed on the applications of Drosophila and zebrafish models.
Significance of Biological Models and Diagnostic Facilities
Explaining the scientific relevance of these systems, the models serve as vital animal models utilized extensively across global scientific research. Scientists leverage these organisms to decode human physiological structures, understand complex diseases, evaluate pharmaceutical drugs, and analyze gene-related biological pathways. Furthermore, the center incorporates aquaculture training focusing on ornamental fish, which involves the scientific cultivation, controlled environmental management, and breeding of colorful, attractive aquatic species. Coupled with an integrated medical diagnostic center, students are granted the unique opportunity to conduct research across these three distinct scientific pillars within a single dedicated skill development hub.
Facilitating Practical Learning for Science Students
Professor Soma, who accompanied her group of students from Hindu College to the Daulat Ram College facility, emphasized the exclusivity of the infrastructure. She highlighted that because this specialized skill development center and zebrafish laboratory are uniquely housed within Daulat Ram College, organizing the visit was crucial for experiential learning. Having been personally associated with the laboratory for an extended period, she ensured her students witnessed the operational workflows and experimental procedures firsthand, equipping them with practical knowledge that will directly benefit their academic and research pursuits.
