Former Indian cricket team fast bowler Ashish Nehra has frequently been discussed as a strong contender for high-profile coaching roles. While serving as the head coach of the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League, Nehra led the franchise to a championship title in their very debut season, followed by another appearance in the summit clash in the subsequent year. Nehra has worked closely with both Shubman Gill and Hardik Pandya during his stint with the franchise. When recently asked to evaluate who among Gill and Pandya makes a better captain, his assessment offered a fascinating perspective on modern leadership.
Nehra pointed out that Shubman Gill, who plays a vital role for India across formats, is currently navigating the learning curve of leadership. He emphasized that with more match experience, Gill's captaincy will continuously improve. Nehra and Hardik Pandya formed a highly successful player-coach partnership back in 2022 during the franchise's inaugural season. Together, they propelled the team to glory in their first year and successfully guided them to the final again in 2023.
Following Pandya's departure from the franchise, the leadership mantle was handed over to the young opening batsman, Shubman Gill. Comparing the leadership approaches of Pandya and Gill, Nehra noted that the two individuals are entirely distinct from one another, likening them to polar opposites. He remarked that both players had not captained extensively prior to taking up the role, drawing a parallel to his own entry into coaching without prior years of heavy experience. According to him, individuals learn through the passage of time, and when a player suddenly finds themselves captaining the national side across formats, they are bound to grow better with experience.
Contrasting Temperaments on the Field
According to Ashish Nehra, Hardik Pandya placed immense trust in his coaching staff and remained constantly eager to learn and adapt. On the other hand, Shubman Gill is relatively quiet and reserved by nature, though he shares an identical enthusiasm for learning and self-improvement. Nehra elaborated that Gill is still in a developmental phase, noting that at around 26 to 27 years of age, he has only handled leadership duties for a brief period of one or two seasons. As he absorbs more match situations, his tactical acumen will naturally sharpen further.
