Experienced Indian fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar has finally brought an end to his long drought for wickets in international cricket. Following his return to the national side, the wait for a breakthrough came to a conclusion as he picked up his first wicket after a span of 1434 days. During the match against New Zealand, he dismissed Daryl Mitchell to break the extended silence on his wicket tally. The last time he had claimed an international wicket was also against New Zealand on November 20, 2022.
The journey back to the bowling crease had not been entirely smooth for Bhuvneshwar Kumar. He was included in the playing eleven for the final match of the home T20 series against New Zealand, but that encounter scheduled in Bengaluru was washed out due to rain. Subsequently, when he traveled with the squad to New Zealand, his outing in the first T20 match proved expensive as he conceded 49 runs in his four overs without picking up any wickets. However, the second match brought a welcome end to his wait for a breakthrough.
Toss Favours India Once Again in Christchurch
In the fixture played at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch against New Zealand, the toss once again went in favor of the Indian team. Captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss for the second consecutive time and opted to bowl first. In the opening T20 match as well, the coin had landed in India's favor. The pitch at the Hagley Oval is historically known to favor the batsmen, requiring disciplined bowling performances.
The nature of the pitch was clearly evident in the first T20 fixture when the Kiwi side posted a massive total of 225 runs against India. In response, the Indian team chased down 226 runs to secure a remarkable victory. This stood as India's highest-ever run chase in T20 international cricket. By winning that match, the side had taken a 1-0 lead in the series, with their sights set on extending it to 2-0 in the second encounter.
