A friendly cricket match in Sri Lanka turned into a nightmare on Sunday when a player collapsed on the pitch while batting and could not be saved, plunging an entire community into mourning within moments.
What happened
The match was played in Beruwala, Sri Lanka, as part of a cricket carnival organised by an Old Boys' Association. The tournament brought together former students for a friendly contest, the kind of casual reunion match usually remembered for laughter and nostalgia rather than tragedy. That changed suddenly when one of the batsmen collapsed at the crease in front of teammates, opponents and spectators.
Who the victim was
The player who died has been identified as Zulfiqar. Local reports put his age between 45 and 46 years. He was taking part in the match as part of the alumni group of a prominent Muslim school located in the China Fort area of Beruwala, playing alongside old schoolmates in what was meant to be a lighthearted reunion on the field.
The moment of collapse
According to eyewitnesses, Zulfiqar was batting when he suddenly fell at the crease. The match was being broadcast live, and the footage showed him batting on 6 runs off 3 balls at the moment the medical emergency struck. The scoreboard at the time read 37 for 5 in 3.4 overs. Play was stopped immediately as people around him rushed to help.
Rushed to hospital, but too late
Those present at the ground tried to assist him right away and he was rushed to Beruwala Regional Hospital. However, according to hospital sources, he had already died before he could be brought in for treatment. The sudden loss turned the atmosphere at the ground from celebration to grief within minutes, with players, organisers and spectators all left in shock.
Tournament suspended, investigation opened
The entire tournament has been suspended indefinitely as the local cricketing community tries to come to terms with the tragedy. It is suspected that Zulfiqar suffered a heart attack, though officials have not yet officially confirmed the cause. Police in Beruwala have opened an investigation into the incident and are awaiting a medical report before drawing any conclusions.
Tributes pour in
In Beruwala, tributes for Zulfiqar continue to pour in, with people sharing memories of him on social media. Those who knew him describe a man who had simply come out to enjoy a game of cricket with old friends, never expecting that he would not return home.
