Experienced opening batsman Mayank Agarwal, who is currently out of contention for the Indian Test team, has secured an opportunity to play in English county cricket. The 35-year-old Mayank has signed an agreement with the Durham cricket club for the final phase of the ongoing County Championship season. He will offer his services for the team's remaining fixtures. Durham is currently performing exceptionally well in Division Two of the County Championship. The team has secured seven victories out of the 10 matches played so far, while three matches ended in draws. Durham holds a commanding lead over the second-placed team and has a stellar opportunity to earn promotion back into Division One.
Filling in for David Bedingham
Mayank Agarwal has been inducted into the squad as a replacement for South African batsman David Bedingham. Bedingham is returning to his home country this week due to South Africa's domestic red-ball season. He recently scored a century against Gloucestershire and played a pivotal role in Durham's comprehensive 10-wicket victory. Mayank is already familiar with English county cricket conditions. He represented Yorkshire in the final three matches of the 2025 season, meaning English conditions will not entirely be new to him. Playing for the Indian national team between 2018 and 2021, Mayank featured in 21 Test matches. During this period, he scored 1,488 runs at an impressive average of 41.33, which included four centuries. His highest individual score stands at 243 runs, which he recorded against Bangladesh in a 2019 Test match in Indore. In domestic cricket as well, Mayank's recent form has been encouraging. Playing for Karnataka in the ongoing Ranji Trophy season, he accumulated 678 runs, including one century and a highest score of 160 runs.
