The opening day of the third Test match between Australia and South Africa at the historic Newlands ground in Cape Town delivered a gripping contest that left the match finely balanced by stumps. At the close of play, the host South African team was bowled out for 329 runs in 82.3 overs during their first innings. The Australian bowling unit displayed remarkable discipline, spearheaded by fast bowler Mitchell Starc whose lethal spell dismantled the Proteas batting lineup.
Strong opening stands and a near miss for Marques Ackerman
The innings began with openers Aiden Markram and Marques Ackerman shouldering the responsibility of giving South Africa a solid platform. Aiden Markram played a cautious yet productive knock of 78 runs from 141 deliveries, striking 10 boundaries and 1 maximum. At the other end, Marques Ackerman adopted an aggressive approach, hammering 95 runs off just 94 balls with the help of 12 boundaries and 2 impressive sixes. Ackerman fell just 5 runs short of a well-deserved century when Nathan Lyon had him stumped by wicketkeeper Alex Carey, providing Australia with a much-needed breakthrough.
Middle-order resilience and Marco Jansen's half-century
Following the departures, David Bedingham stepped up in the middle order to contribute a useful 50 runs from 80 balls, hitting 7 boundaries. However, captain Temba Bavuma failed to score, becoming another victim of Nathan Lyon, while Matthew Breetzke managed only 2 runs before falling to the spin of Cooper Connolly. Wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton fought hard for his 42 runs off 83 balls with 5 boundaries, but lacked sustained support from the other end. Lower down the order, Marco Jansen played an aggressive counter-attacking knock of 52 runs from 71 deliveries, featuring 7 boundaries, which pushed the total past the 300-run mark before the innings concluded.
Mitchell Starc leads the Australian bowling charge
Mitchell Starc was the standout performer with the ball for Australia, wreaking havoc in the opposition ranks. Starc claimed 6 wickets while conceding 72 runs across 16.3 overs, which included 2 maiden overs, effectively tearing through the South African batting order. Veteran spinner Nathan Lyon provided economical support by taking 2 crucial wickets for 71 runs in 23 overs. Josh Helewood and Cooper Connolly picked up 1 wicket each, while captain Pat Cummins and Matt Renshaw went wicketless.
