Teenage batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi walked out for his international debut in the second T20I against England at Manchester after being named in India's playing XI, and the moment instantly rewrote the record books. He is now the youngest player ever to debut for India in international cricket, surpassing a record that had stood in Sachin Tendulkar's name.
Captain backs the teenager at the toss
Winning the toss, India captain Shreyas Iyer first announced that his side would bat first. He then revealed that Vaibhav Suryavanshi had been brought into the XI in place of Sanju Samson. Speaking about the youngster, Iyer said everyone had seen over the past few months just how well Vaibhav has been batting, adding that he fully deserves his place in this side.
Iyer went on to say that Vaibhav never lets pressure get to him and plays without any fear. According to the captain, the young batter is well aware of the challenges he is likely to face in the matches ahead. Iyer also pointed out that the way Vaibhav bats in the nets and takes on bowlers is proof enough of how good a player he is.
Tendulkar's record falls
The moment he was handed his place in the XI, Vaibhav Suryavanshi became the youngest player to debut for India in international cricket, breaking the record that had earlier belonged to Sachin Tendulkar.
Second youngest debutant among Full Member nations
Suryavanshi also picked up another landmark on the day. He is now the second youngest player to debut in international cricket among Full Member teams. The record at the very top belongs to Pakistan's Hasan Raza, who debuted against Zimbabwe at just 14 years and 227 days. Vaibhav now sits second on that list, followed by Bangladesh's Mohammad Sharif (15 years 116 days), Pakistan's Mushtaq Mohammad (15 years 124 days) and Aaqib Javed (16 years 127 days). Finding a place on this list alongside some of the game's biggest names at such a young age is a massive milestone in Suryavanshi's career.
Why this moment matters for Vaibhav
Earning a place in India's playing XI and debuting in the very same match ranks among the biggest achievements of Vaibhav Suryavanshi's young career so far. Captain Shreyas Iyer's open backing also shows that the team management has full confidence in the teenager's ability. All eyes will now be on how Vaibhav makes the most of this opportunity in the matches to come.
