Consumers relied on a standalone app simply named Copilot for general queries, while enterprise and academic users operated under the Microsoft 365 Copilot branding tailored for integrations inside Word and Excel. This split generated understandable confusion for everyday users trying to determine which tools, subscriptions, and capabilities belonged to which edition. This week, Microsoft officially announced its plan to merge both separate Copilot environments into one streamlined, universal application.

The company specified that Podcasts, Deep Research, and Group Chat messages are being officially discontinued on August 18. This firm deadline leaves users with a narrow window to safeguard their existing content. Users relying on Copilot's Group Chat functionality must manually copy and export their message histories and generated images prior to August 18, as group conversations will become permanently inaccessible once the deadline passes.
A similar strict deadline applies to the AI Podcasts feature. After August 18, users will no longer be permitted to generate new podcasts, nor will they be able to stream or retrieve previously created audio podcasts within the application. Microsoft recommends exporting all podcast audio files immediately. Regarding Deep Research, reports created prior to August 18 will remain accessible for reading and downloading after the cutoff date. However, continuing to generate new analytical reports using the Deep Research tool after August 18 will strictly require an active, paid Microsoft 365 Premium subscription.
