Young Bangladesh batsman Towhid Hridoy delivered a phenomenal performance during the second Test match against the West Indies, turning the tide of the game with his brilliant bat. When the team found itself struggling early in the first innings, facing the prospect of conceding a massive lead, Hridoy anchored the crease. He not only rescued the batting lineup from a precarious position but also converted his maiden Test century into a magnificent double century, breaking a long-standing national record in the process.
Key Highlights of the Historic Knock
Towhid Hridoy remained unbeaten on 242 runs from 359 deliveries on November 7, showcasing immense resilience and shot-making ability. His memorable innings featured 22 boundaries and 11 towering sixes, completely disrupting the opposition bowling attack. Bolstered by this remarkable knock, Bangladesh posted a total of 386 runs in their first innings. This surpassed the West Indies first-innings total of 356, allowing Bangladesh to secure a crucial 30-run lead.
Breaking Mushfiqur Rahim's Record
With this phenomenal double century, Hridoy became only the fourth batsman from Bangladesh to score a double ton in Test cricket, joining the elite company of Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan, and Tamim Iqbal. Furthermore, he eclipsed Mushfiqur Rahim's previous record of 219 runs. Hridoy now holds the record for the highest individual score by any Bangladeshi player in the history of Test cricket.
Rescuing the Innings from Collapse
The rescue mission began when play resumed on the third day with Bangladesh struggling at 88 for three. Hridoy teamed up with veteran batsman Mushfiqur Rahim to stabilize the innings through careful accumulation. The pair put together a 73-run partnership before Jomel Warrican dismissed Rahim to break the stand. However, a sudden collapse followed as Warrican and captain Roston Chase tore through the middle order, reducing Bangladesh to 184 for seven and putting the team in serious jeopardy.
Crucial Lower-Order Partnerships
Refusing to surrender, Hridoy found a reliable partner in Taijul Islam, and the duo added 117 runs for the eighth wicket to swing the momentum back. Hridoy reached his maiden Test century off 171 balls before shifting gears to launch a severe counterattack against the West Indies bowlers. After Taijul was dismissed for 22 by Warrican, Hridoy partnered with Taskin Ahmed to add another vital 85 runs for the ninth wicket. Hridoy brought up his double century in 304 balls, while Warrican finished with four wickets for 104 runs before Jayden Seales ended the innings.
