An Air India spokesperson emphasized that the airline routinely conducts drug testing for its crew members in compliance with directives issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The airline confirmed that a mandatory post-flight screening was performed on the pilots in accordance with prescribed safety procedures.
However, because the actual test results have not been formally shared with Air India, the management remains unable to confirm or deny any specific conclusions. The spokesperson added that routine drug testing is conducted independently of specific operational occurrences and that the company will fully assist regulatory bodies as required.
Details of the Mid-Air Turbulence Event
The incident occurred on August 4 when Air India flight AI2379 was en route from Phuket, Thailand, to Delhi. During the cruise phase, the aircraft encountered severe turbulence lasting between 4 and 5 minutes, experiencing an abrupt altitude drop of approximately 300 feet. The sudden maneuver resulted in injuries to at least 17 individuals on board.
The aircraft was carrying a total of 137 passengers and 8 crew members. Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu confirmed that among the injured were four cabin crew members who sustained neck and spinal injuries. The DGCA initiated a formal inquiry into the sequence of events immediately following the landing.
