Stepping forward to preserve these cultural gems, Chinmoy Saikia, a dedicated music lover from Nagaon, undertook the responsibility of restoring and archiving the artist's rare and forgotten recordings before physical decay erased them entirely.
Years of Dedicated Cassette Preservation
Over several years, Chinmoy Saikia painstakingly collected classic audio and video cassettes featuring Zubeen Garg's earlier studio work and regional tracks. By transferring these historic recordings from delicate physical media into modern formats, he has successfully converted and archived more than 200 individual tracks. His meticulous effort has created a rare musical vault documenting the artist's foundational creative era.
Vintage Recordings Absent from Modern Streaming Platforms
Chinmoy pointed out that among the 200 digitized tracks, many are completely unavailable on major online directories such as YouTube or contemporary music streaming applications. During the 1990s, cassette tapes served as the primary medium for music listeners, who purchased physical albums to enjoy their favourite singers at home. However, magnetic tapes degrade over time, suffer physical breakage, or suffer irreversible loss from damp environments. Without this timely digitisation effort, these rare creations by Zubeen Garg would have vanished permanently without a trace.

Zubeen Garg stands as one of the most prominent musical figures from Assam and the entire northeastern region of India. Beyond Assamese folk and modern tracks, his chart-topping melodies in Hindi and various other languages have earned him a distinct reputation in the national music landscape. While his contemporary catalogue is readily accessible on the web, tracking down original tape recordings remained an uphill battle. The individual dedication demonstrated by Chinmoy highlights how community archivists play a crucial role in safeguarding vintage regional music for future generations.
