In the widely acclaimed suspense franchise Drishyam, actor Kamlesh Sawant stepped into the shoes of the relentless and brutal police officer Gaitonde, leaving a mark that audiences remember years later. While the role brought widespread acclaim for his acting skills, Sawant also ended up bearing the brunt of audience rage in his real life, to the extent of receiving abusive telephone calls from strangers deeply triggered by his character's cruelty.
Late-Evening Calls and Unfiltered Public Rage
Recalling the unsettling encounters, Sawant explained how an ordinary evening turned bizarre due to a persistent caller. Around 8:00 PM, his phone rang from an unsaved contact. Assuming it was routine, the actor picked up. The caller began by asking whether he had worked in Drishyam and specifically confirmed if he was the one who played Gaitonde. The moment Sawant answered yes, the person on the other end erupted into severe verbal abuse, lashing out at him for raising his hand against a young child on screen.
Taken aback, Sawant promptly hung up, but the caller did not stop. The actor received five consecutive calls, with the caller hurling insults every single time. At one point, noticing a missed call, Sawant even dialed back, only for the caller to resume swearing immediately. Reflecting on the caller's state of mind, the actor deduced that the viewer was likely having drinks at 8:00 PM while watching the film on television, lost emotional composure during the interrogation scene, and reacted impulsively because the young child actor's realistic reactions made the sequence intensely hard to watch.
Censors Intervened to Tone Down Interrogation Violence
Discussing the filming process, Sawant revealed that the original cut of the interrogation sequence contained far more graphic physical assault than what ultimately made it to theaters. In the script, his character was required to physically assault the entire family during the high-pressure police custody sequence.
However, the film certification authorities intervened to prune the severity of those scenes. Because the sequence depicted a male police officer physically assaulting women and a minor, extensive portions were edited out before theatrical distribution. Sawant acknowledged that this regulatory trimming softened the blow, noting that if the complete, unedited extent of the violence had remained on screen, the public backlash against his character would have been even more severe.
