A sudden decline in blood platelet counts is a major health concern during a dengue infection, but dietary mistakes made during recovery can severely complicate the patient's condition. A widely held belief leads many to feed dengue patients goat milk or rich, fatty foods in the hope of rapidly increasing platelets. However, Dr. Jyoti Singh, a dietitian at the Divisional Hospital in Mirzapur, warns that serving goat milk or high-fat foods can be extremely hazardous and may cause liver damage. Since the liver is already vulnerable during viral fever, patients require light, easily digestible meals rather than heavy fats.
Why Goat Milk Harms the Liver and What to Eat Instead
According to Dr. Jyoti Singh, viral infections like dengue increase liver sensitivity. Consuming high-fat items, including goat milk, places excessive stress on the digestive system and risks liver impairment. Instead of heavy foods, dengue patients should be offered light meals like khichdi, porridge (daliya), idli, and moong dal. These foods are gentle on the stomach and easy to digest. Furthermore, foods like moong dal and porridge supply ample protein, helping the patient regain strength safely.
Replenishing Potassium and Essential Minerals
Maintaining balanced levels of essential minerals, especially potassium, is critical for dengue recovery. While coconut water is widely used for this purpose, patients who cannot afford it do not need to worry. Drinking Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) or eating regular fresh fruits can fulfill the body's requirements. For example, eating two apples provides roughly the same amount of potassium as coconut water. Among citrus options, amla (Indian gooseberry) is an excellent and budget-friendly source of potassium.
Benefits of Drumstick Leaf Juice and Leafy Vegetable Soup
Herbal remedies can effectively fulfill daily nutritional needs during infection. Drinking 15 ml of drumstick (sehjan) leaf juice daily satisfies the body's daily requirements for both iron and potassium. Additionally, patients should be given warm soup prepared from thoroughly washed and cooked green leafy vegetables. This soup is packed with proteins and vital minerals that actively speed up dengue recovery.
Role of Fluids and Herbal Infusions in Platelet Recovery
Maximizing fluid intake is essential for managing dengue effectively. Dr. Jyoti Singh advises serving warm water, clove-infused water, and ginger water. These drinks prevent dehydration while helping to combat the viral infection inside the body. Proper hydration naturally speeds up the body's mechanism for restoring platelet counts. Dietitians stress that patients and families should not panic over falling platelets, but rather focus on a disciplined, balanced diet to ensure a quick recovery.
