The deceased, identified as Seema, was married to Ashwani. The situation took a volatile turn when the woman's maternal family outright rejected the suggestion of suicide, instead accusing the in-laws of murder. The relatives claim that Seema had been subjected to prolonged physical and mental harassment, which they believe ultimately led to her death.
Sequence of Events and Medical Treatment
According to reports, Seema's health deteriorated suddenly on Tuesday. It is alleged that she had consumed some form of poisonous substance. Upon receiving information from the husband, her maternal family rushed to Chataṛa. She was initially taken to the Regional Hospital in Una, but due to her critical condition, doctors referred her elsewhere. Following this, she was moved to a private hospital in Una and subsequently taken to a hospital in Punjab for advanced care. Tragically, she succumbed to her condition late Wednesday night while undergoing treatment.
Outcry at the Hospital During Post-mortem
Tensions flared on Thursday morning when Seema's body was brought to the Regional Hospital in Una for a post-mortem examination. Her family members gathered in large numbers within the hospital premises, protesting vehemently and raising slogans against the in-laws. Paramjit, a relative of the deceased, explicitly alleged dowry harassment, stating that they had already provided a car as dowry, yet the in-laws continued to demand a Bullet motorcycle. He claimed that Seema was frequently beaten and insisted that this was a clear case of murder rather than suicide, demanding strict action against those responsible.
Police Investigation and Next Steps
Recognizing the sensitivity of the situation, the police have taken swift action by detaining the victim's husband for questioning. According to Una ASP Surendra Sharma, the police are conducting a thorough investigation into every aspect of the case. He clarified that any future legal proceedings will be strictly based on the findings of the post-mortem report, medical evidence, and facts uncovered during the ongoing investigation. The incident has caused significant public concern in the area, with widespread demands for justice.
