Heavy monsoon rains triggered widespread disruption and destruction across multiple districts of Himachal Pradesh. In Solan district, the industrial town of Parwanoo was severely affected following intense torrential downpours on Wednesday night. Widespread destruction was observed across several localities, stretching from the Parwanoo Bypass to Sector 2. While no loss of life was reported within Parwanoo town itself, the sudden inundation of homes and severe landslides created immense panic among local residents. Concurrently, heavy rainfall was recorded in the Bharwain area of Una district on Thursday morning, continuing the spell of turbulent weather across the region.
Infrastructure Damage and Highway Blockades in Parwanoo
The heavy rainfall in Parwanoo late Wednesday evening posed severe hazards in Sector 3, where hundreds of electric poles stored by the electricity board on loose roadside soil came under immediate threat. Due to soil erosion and mudslides, approximately 10 to 12 electric poles collapsed down the slope, raising fears of power network disruptions. Meanwhile, vehicular movement on the Kalka-Shimla National Highway came to a complete standstill after a massive landslide deposited heavy debris on the road stretch near Timber Trail. Flash floodwaters overflowing onto the highway trapped an emergency ambulance, stranding commuters and drivers amidst heavy downpours.
Road Blockades and Severe Landslides in Rural Panchayats
Gram Panchayat Jangeshu experienced extensive property and land damage during the storm. In Teedo village, a flash flood in a local mountain stream swept massive quantities of mud and debris across agricultural fields, farmlands, and village areas. Nearby Kundalu village also witnessed a major landslide that washed debris onto local roads. As a consequence, two vital arterial routes—the Kasauli-Kalka route via Jangeshu and the Kasauli-Kalka route via Kundalu—were completely blocked to all vehicular traffic, severing essential transportation links for several rural settlements.
Residential Flooding and Traffic Chaos Near Apple Market
In Sector 6 of Parwanoo, a massive landslide adjacent to the apple market dumped huge piles of rock and silt onto the road, halting movement and triggering long vehicle queues. Stranded commuters endured severe hardship amidst continuous rainfall. Nearby residential blocks 57, 58, and 59 faced severe inundation as rainwater flooded directly into houses. Local residents attributed the crisis to inadequate municipal drainage infrastructure, which forced road runoff into living quarters and required families to work through the night to bail out water and safeguard their belongings. Further along the Kalka-Shimla National Highway at Jabli, a sudden surge in a local stream washed floodwaters and debris directly over a commercial shop, forcing the shopkeeper to run to save his life.
Fatal Stream Sweeping Incident in Mandi District
A fatal accident was reported from Mandi district amid the ongoing spell of severe weather. In the Chohar Valley of Mandi, 55-year-old Sabla Ram lost his life after being swept away by swift currents in a swollen mountain stream. Sabla Ram had ventured out to gather walnuts and was returning home when he attempted to cross the Sawad Nallah. He was caught off guard by a sudden rise in water volume and washed downstream. Local residents managed to pull him from the rushing water and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where attending doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
