The narrative unfolds inside Metropia, an enormous metropolis conceived as an alternate future envisioned through a 1939 cultural lens. Against a sprawling skyline characterized by soaring art deco architecture, soaring flight vehicles, and functional personal jetpacks, the plot weaves classic crime tropes with speculative fiction. The core mystery revolves around an intricate homicide investigation intertwined with extraterrestrial life and high-profile celebrity culture.

Leading the voice cast is Sam Rockwell, portraying hardboiled private investigator Raymond Gunn in the classic vein of Humphrey Bogart. Scarlett Johansson lends her voice to Venus Nova, a magnetic multimedia luminary and quintessential femme fatale who pulls Gunn into danger. Musician and actor Tom Waits voices Gunn's one-eyed extraterrestrial associate.
