Marvel fans have had plenty to cheer about lately, from Ryan Gosling's casting as Ghost Rider and confirmation that Ryan Coogler will direct Black Panther III, to the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day and a fresh trailer for Avengers: Doomsday. That winning streak has hit a bump now: Wonder Man, the Disney+ series from Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, has been cancelled, just four months after the streamer renewed it for a second season.
An Unexpected Season 2 Green Light
Wonder Man debuted in January to strong reviews and earned its star, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, an Emmy nomination for playing Simon Williams, a struggling actor hiding a superpowered secret. Disney+ dropped the entire first season at once with little fanfare, an unceremonious rollout that left little reason to expect the show would continue. That is exactly why the second season order in March landed as a genuinely welcome surprise for viewers who had already made peace with the show ending after one run.
Writers Let Go Before A Room Even Opened
Today's cancellation is harder to square with that renewal news. A writers' room for the second season was never even opened, and the show's entire writing staff has already been let go to move on to other projects, a sign that plans for more episodes were abandoned almost as soon as they were announced.
Simon Williams And Trevor Slattery May Still Return
There is one bright spot in an otherwise disappointing turn of events. Even though Wonder Man will not get a second season, its characters, including Simon Williams and his actor friend Trevor Slattery, played by Sir Ben Kingsley, could still turn up in other MCU projects down the line. That keeps alive hope for an eventual Great Lake Avengers debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even if the Wonder Man series itself will not be the one to deliver it. Simon Williams, Doorman and Von Kovak may yet get their moment on screen elsewhere in Marvel's future slate.
