Paramount Pictures has unveiled a fresh batch of first-look photos from Children Of Blood And Bone, giving fans their most detailed glimpse yet at director Gina Prince-Bythewood's big-budget adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi's bestselling young adult fantasy novel. The images arrive after Prince-Bythewood, who previously helmed the 2022 historical action film The Woman King, was confirmed to be steering this ambitious African-inspired fantasy epic to the screen, and they offer the first real sense of how her starry ensemble cast is bringing the world of Orïsha to life.
A Galaxy Of Stars Brings Orïsha To Life
The newly released stills introduce audiences to the mythical, magic-infused African kingdom of Orïsha, a realm whose lavish costumes and imagery conceal darker power struggles beneath the surface. Among the figures visible in the photos are the kingdom's ruthless rulers, Queen Nehanda, played by Regina King, and King Saran, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor. Also featured is Saran's formidable second-in-command, Admiral Kaea, portrayed by Cynthia Erivo, alongside Lekam, the magic-wielding sacred high priest known as a sêntaro, played by Idris Elba. Viola Davis appears as Mama Agba, the wise Seer who guides the story's younger characters.
At the centre of it all is Zélie, the white-haired young member of the maji clan who serves as the story's rebellious heroine, played by breakout lead Thuso Mbedu. Zélie sets out to restore magic to her Ikú Clan after it was violently stripped away, while simultaneously igniting a rebellion against the mistreatment her people have endured. The photos also show Zélie's brother Tzain, played by Tosin Cole, as well as royal siblings Amari and Inan, played by Amandla Stenberg and Damson Idris respectively, both of whom join forces to challenge and ultimately try to end their father King Saran's brutal reign. The wider ensemble also includes Bukky Bakray and Lashana Lynch.
A Saga Rooted In West African Mythology
Children Of Blood And Bone is widely regarded as one of the most resonant fantasy stories of the 21st century, blending a coming-of-age narrative with a pointed examination of slavery and oppression, all wrapped inside a rollicking adventure steeped in West African mythology. The novel spawned two sequels, Children Of Virtue And Vengeance and Children Of Anguish And Anarchy, extending Zélie's story into a wider saga that the film adaptation may eventually draw from.
When Will Children Of Blood And Bone Release?
With Gina Prince-Bythewood directing and this stacked cast in place, anticipation for the adaptation continues to build ahead of its 15 January, 2027 release date.
