Indonesian filmmaker Timo Tjahjanto has added another high-profile Hollywood feature to his growing slate, coming aboard to direct the original action comedy The Burnout for Miramax. The announcement lands in the very same week that audiences got their first look at his work on The Beekeeper 2 with the debut of its first trailer. With each new assignment, Tjahjanto continues to solidify his reputation as one of the most exciting genre directors working across both global and American action cinema today.
A Fusion of Espionage Suspense and Laid-Back Comedy
The core concept behind The Burnout is being pitched around an unusual cinematic mashup, framing the story as The Big Lebowski crossed with Jason Bourne. The narrative follows a past-his-prime former CIA operative who has abandoned the deadly world of espionage in favor of an aimless, carefree existence under the sun in Ibiza. His peaceful retirement unravels abruptly when chaotic circumstances pull him back into life-or-death operative duties against his wishes.
The screenplay comes from screenwriter Tom O'Connor, known for penning The Hitman's Bodyguard, with additional punch-ups and polish contributed by Hunter Toro. While the premise of a retired operative forced out of hiding carries familiar genre echoes, combining relaxed slacker humor with brutal spycraft promises a distinct comedic flavor that stands apart from standard undercover thrillers.
From Cult Horror to Major Studio Sequels
Tjahjanto first captured international attention by co-directing the acclaimed Safe Haven segment alongside Gareth Evans in the anthology anthology V/H/S/ 2. He followed that breakout with the hyper-violent martial arts feature The Night Comes For Us, crafted as a tribute to 1980s Hong Kong action cinema, alongside the supernatural horror title May the Devil Take You. His transition into mainstream studio filmmaking was further cemented with his work on Nobody 2, proving his ability to handle fast-paced Hollywood action.
An Expanding Pipeline of Thrillers and Sequels
The Burnout represents only one piece of an increasingly packed production calendar for the director. His future slate also includes an adaptation of the acclaimed video game Sleeping Dogs, which is set to star Simu Liu in the lead role. Additionally, Tjahjanto is preparing a sequel to the popular Netflix hit The Shadow Strays, alongside an untitled Indonesian-language thriller currently in active production for the same streaming platform, guaranteeing an abundant run of high-impact releases for genre enthusiasts.
