Live: Landslide in Mumbai's Kurla leaves 4 dead and several trapped; emergency teams on site

The deceased were shifted to Rathod Medical located in Kurla West. According to Deputy Chief Fire Brigade K. R. Yadav, two individuals remain trapped beneath the collapsed structure, with search and rescue operations currently ongoing.

Mayor Ritu Tawde visited the site to evaluate the ongoing relief work and declared a financial assistance of ₹4 lakh to the families of each deceased individual, alongside ₹50,000 for every injured victim. According to the mayor, the collapse occurred when soil and mud from the adjacent hillock slid down onto two to three dwellings, causing fatalities and structural losses. She interacted with the impacted families to express her condolences and instructed all on-ground administrative teams to speed up the rescue and relief efforts. The site visit was also attended by Ward Committee Chairman Vijayendra Shinde, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Eastern Suburbs) Dr. Avinash Dhakane, and Assistant Commissioner (In-charge) of L Ward Anil Jadhav. "The location where the incident took place and its access pathway are extremely narrow, permitting only single-file movement. Despite these challenges, personnel from the BMC, Mumbai Fire Brigade, NDRF, and Mumbai Police are putting in relentless effort to pull out those trapped under the debris," stated Ms. Tawde.

Rescue personnel pulled out a body from the landslide debris at Gaushiya Chawl in Chirag Nagar near Ghatkopar, while searches continue to locate any surviving victims.

Approximately six to eight residents are believed to be trapped beneath debris following an early-morning landslide at Gaushiya Chawl in Chirag Nagar, close to Rathod Medical in Mumbai's Kurla area, on Wednesday (August 12, 2026). The disaster struck at roughly 3:48 AM. DCP Ganesh Shinde stated that incessant rainfall triggered the landslip. So far, two bodies have been recovered from the site as rescue operations proceed. Police officers, along with personnel from the BMC, NDRF, and other emergency response agencies, are on-site conducting rescue operations.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation officials stated that citizens living in areas vulnerable to rockslides or landslides are consistently cautioned and asked to move to safer locations. In addition, formal advisories are distributed prior to the monsoon season as a preventive step. The civic administration emphasized that residents of Ashok Nagar's Hill No. 3 in Kurla had been alerted regarding potential dangers through targeted safety drives and warnings.
